Nicholas Stoller, a monumental figure in the world of romantic comedies, takes the directing seat in You’re Cordially Invited. You might remember him from classics in the 2000s like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Yes Man. The movie is set to star some legendary 2000s-era comedians like Will Ferrell and Reese Witherspoon alongside Geraldine Viswanathan, Meredith Hagner, and Celia Weston.

In the start of the movie, Margot and Jim appear to be settling for an agreement. Later at the rehearsal dinner, Margot is further provoked by her family for the rather lackluster event. It doesn’t help that Jim’s rendition is an absolute hit, making her envious. The following day, Margot is back-biting about Jim, making fun of his hairstyles for the character Jenni. She goes on to claim that his duet with Jenni during the diner is borderline incestuous.
I think it is safe to say that Jim overhears all of that and isn’t too pleased with it. In response, he decides to retaliate by ruining Neve’s wedding by extending Jenni’s and then having the ferry captain splash water everywhere on the docks. However, he feels remorse when the dock shatters, inundating the guests. He does apologize the best he can, but Margot isn’t happy. And thus begins a dirty feud as they both try to get the best of one another.
What troubles the family relations of Jim and Margot?
In the middle of everything, Jim and Margot end up having tiffs with their own family.
In the film, we can see a classic example of a helicopter dad in Jim. Even Jenni seems to indulge him to some extent due to his guilt. Regardless, he sabotages her wedding in the process by claiming her husband, Oliver, is cheating on her. To her immense surprise, Jim’s claims ends up being true after she makes out with two men to spite him. When screenshots of the altercation surface, she is furious that he so easily accepted her husband’s name.
Lottie storms off and states that if they tell each other the truth, then it would be equally terrible because lying becomes no option. She carries the guilt of being the reason Jim is happy. He acknowledges that he has made mistakes, but I protected her when his mum died when she was young. “We will promise to be truthful with each other and assured moving forward,” said Jim.
Margot thinks of herself in her world, disconnected from her family. She assumes that they have isolated her and look down on her for living differently than she does. Her siblings, along with her mother,r Flora argue that it is Margot who never made the effort to reach out to them. Additionally, Flora admits to being judgmental toward her mother and laments for having done the same to Margot.
In the last scene of the movie, the family is happily taking a Christmas photograph and Margot is showing her office to her family.
What propels Margot to aid Jim in reaching his daughter?
After the cheating debacle, Jenni storms off the venue with Oliver, who posts a TikTok soon after announcing their annulled marriage. Jim is completely lost at this point but with the guidance of Margot, he goes ahead and helps Jenni figure out a way to save the marriage. Without him knowing, she gives away her car with no hesitation, just so he can get to the island in time.
As Jim goes to contend with Jenni’s bridesmaids, he manages to patch things up with her. It’s a mess. But Jenni and Oliver seem to agree that they are too young to be getting married, though they will be moving in together. While everyone goes their separate ways, Jenni mentions how Jim has a crush on Margot.
After the trip to the island, Jim has been borderline obsessed with Margot and randomly catches himself grinning at her. Margot, for her part, is astonished but as she thinks back to the weekend, she also remembers that she has fallen for Jim too. After dropping him off at home, they reminisce about the chaotic weekend before sharing a kiss.
In the epilogue, Margot sends out a Christmas card featuring Jim, Jenni, and Oliver, and in turn, Jim proposes to Margot. To his surprise, she gladly accepts but states that she doesn’t like weddings and would prefer to elope.
