How unfortunate it is when a film has all its pieces together but still creates an utter disappointment of a film. This is exemplified in the case of an Australian thriller titled ‘You Will Never Find Me’ written and directed by rookie filmmakers Indiana Bell and Josiah Allen. The movie was added to Shudder in March and starts with gusto, as there are the first twenty minutes are breathtaking and a gripping climax is the last quarter of the film.
These technical details are seamlessly integrated into the picture, enhancing the film’s authentic feel. However, these events, together with the promising beginning, are simply not enough to say that the film maintains its quality. The atmosphere is cold but the script comes up short and the film fails to earn any regard.
Patrick is home alone in his mobile home, he gets disturbed by children from the neighborhood who knock on his door and run away. One night, to his dismay, some other person knocks on his door. Even in the heat of the moment, Patrick gets annoyed only to later see a woman, who shivers from the cold, standing at his door. He offers her clothes and food, and they seem to hit it off, although she seems reluctant at first.
While the thunderstorm rages outside, they both try to shift in their seats and get as comfortable as possible. With the words still unspoken, and even more unexpressed, they continue being skeptical of each other as their whispers are audible to the viewers.
Moreover, along with the tension that is already present in the trailer, there is another strange sound that is heard in the background which adds a creepy element to the already existing scenario. Since both of them had no friends to help each other, the level of animosity between them was at its highest. Amid such tension, a power cut suddenly changes everything.
Beginning with the woman’s point of view, the motion picture garners the viewer’s curiosity about why she would venture out during such powerful natural disturbances. Did she seek cover simply because of the downpour, or did she have something more dark and devious planned? To add another layer, which type of story is the film about- a thriller dealing with crime, or a suspenseful horror narrative? Further, what is the purpose of those kids in the screenplay? The answer to these questions can only be uncovered when you watch ‘You Will Never Find Me’.
The filmmakers have so far succeeded in creating an unsettling ambiance with their choice of setting, but several elements are featured in the film that deserve special consideration. For the film to work convincingly and create enjoyment for the audiences, it is important to have an intelligent screenwriter who can shape the narrative well. Judging only by the trailers one might get the impression as if the film is promising something new and innovative, but sadly The Covenant is stale.
Perhaps there is an indirectly perceived opportunity to satisfy a relatively vague expectation from the trailers in a low-budget British horror drama, which prominently features several well-known actors. While unsuccessful, there is still an engaging concept that the film begins with. However, the author of the film creates a pseudo jerk which stagnates the film and eventually makes it borderline unwatchable.
