Umjolo: The Gone Girl Plot Summary
The movie is a happy ending romantic comedy from South Africa, directed by Fikile Mogodi. The lead roles are played by Shezi Sibongiseni as Lethu and Tyson Mathonsi as Lucky. Lethu and Lucky on the outside look like the ideal couple. They are perfect together and always encourage each other to reach their goals.
Lethu nevertheless comes to understand that Lucky is not the knight in shining armour he wishes everyone to imagine him to be. Lethu, throughout their relationship, carried herself with luck unlike her sister-in-law Bridget, who is trapped with the philandering Themba. Nevertheless, when Lethu is infected, she understands that Lucky is a stealthy and more menacing assassin. A superior player to his brother, and that simply sends her head spinning.
Will Lethu be able to forgive Lucky?
Lethu has returned from the hospital, Lucky knows that today will be a tough day for him and admits that he did cheat on her. He cries, apologizes abundantly and states that he only has slept with a girl once and it was an accident. A lapse in concentration that he swears will not ever happen all over again. It’s something he claims doesn’t justify ruining their relationship, their engagement over. And after all, it is great, Lethu ponders over it and they retire for the night.
Each time he gets a notification, it sounds, an unconcealed degradation of himself testifies to the message influx exceeding fifteen women that night. All of his lovers are either mad or depressed, lamenting the fact that he gave them the disease chlamydia. Lethu cannot believe her eyes as she looks at the screen. She shakes Lucky awake and starts screaming at him again in anger. After a week, Lethu’s patience wears thin and she demands appreciation from Lucky. He tells her that being faithful to one woman isn’t practical.
Lethu is utterly distraught and in anguish; she is convinced that Lucky is cheating on her. He loves her deeply, but also feels the desire to sleep with other women.
That is why she ends the engagement and heads to the village where her granny resides to sort out her thoughts. Since she caught Lucky having other affairs, she hasn’t been able to concentrate and is in danger of losing her big business deal with The James. She’s an event manager who has a large project needing her full attention and motivation.
After sobbing on her grandma’s lap for a couple of days, Lethu is finally able to compose herself. She counsels her not to break up with Lucky since his feelings for her are genuine and all males are unfaithful. She goes back to her house with a ready counter to Lucky’s provocations.
What does Lethu’s counter consist of?
And Lethu comes back only to find Lucky mourning, as she abandoned her. He has been thinking for the past few days and has made up his mind that he will win Lethu back. Himba, his brother, tells him enough time to be unfaithful. Himba has seen sense and has turned a new leaf. He is no more off-chasing skirts.
All of the changes he has gone through of late raise eyebrows. Most people think that the reason why he has changed his way is because some schoolboys beat him. He sells the same cheating technique to Lucky and tells him to lessen the strain that comes with cheating.
But when Lethu comes back, Lethu makes it clear that she is comfortable with open relationships. If Lucky is allowed to sleep with other people, so does she. Lucky hates that he had to agree to it, they came up with 2 rules. They won’t assign anyone special and agree on the principle of moderation.
How effective is the practice of an open relationship?
The first time she has to tell her friends that yes I can do it, deep inside she knows she can not go through with it. In the end, she eventually reveals to her best friend Amanda, who assists her in everything, that she is not pleased with things as they are. But after a few weeks, she can shift her focus on the things that are not so bad about the situation. Such as the fact that she no longer has to worry about things that used to bother her before her relationship. She returns to dancing and valuing her own company.
Previously Lucky would not allow her the freedom to be herself, go out, have a life, or even a few interests. Laila even attempted to date but there was no way in which she could bring herself to bed a different man.
On the other hand, Lucky maintains his promiscuous lifestyle. In addition, he is also in a volatile relationship with Amanda. Ironically, he is quick to call Lethu a sl*t when he comes home to see a delivery man serving his purposes.
What is the conclusion of Umjolo: Gone Girl?
In expanding new horizons for herself, Lethu makes the most out of the Jama wedding. During the wedding, she notices Lucky and Amanda making out, and all at once it clicks for her that he is nothing but a pompous cheating scumbag. By this time, she has reached a point where she is over everything to the extent of feeling the need to express anger or weep. She hopes for the best for the two and dismisses Amanda. She leaves the party after returning the engagement ring and going back to the celebration.
