Max recently released an exploration of internet fandom titled They Called Him Mostly Harmless. It follows the hiker who perished while traversing the Appalachian Trail, as millions attempt to find the reason for the odd and accidental death in South Florida. As a result of Satan’s interactions with other participants of the activity, many saw the mystery of his passing as an enigma worthy of investigative efforts that took them on an informative trail filled with disinformation and internet searching.
It is worth noting that there is greater detail in this documentary that is attempting to pitch to the true crime genre, but is attempting to bring forth a compelling storyline that revolves around the duality of existence, online and in the wilds, braving nature. The title, They Called Him Mostly Harmless, is based on the fact that while some professional climbers deny giving names on the trails and these animals instead had lots of nicknames, one of them is Mostly Harmless.
His random associations were always painful in particular for his mates whom he happened to meet on the hiking site. He would not portray himself as a blabbermouth mouth instead, he would pick and choose the details he wished to share with people.
The body of ‘Mostly Harmless’ was discovered in a tent, and the inquisitiveness surrounding him moved to the hiking circle on social media. His remains were discovered during the summer of 2018, weighing around 80 pounds and appearing like a skeleton covered in old flesh.
The mystery was enthralling enough to capture the attention of internet sleuths across the world, all keen on uncovering this man’s identity. Did someone kill him? Perhaps he was ill and simply chose to lie down and perish? No one knew this individual, but he must have had someone searching for him, right?
From there, Maybe He Was Right turns of sorts, introducing rival internet arms who battle for the answers that were hanging around Mostly Harmless. People who were lucky to meet him said that there was something about this man as if he was on some sort of crusade; others who were aware of his mission were determined to uncover the reason for his departure from this world.
One of the most controversial points in this documentary is the one where he draws a picture of the protagonist of the film: was he a fugitive? Did he become a killer? Or did he simply slaughter someone during one of his lengthy strolls? Although none of the people in this picture asks these questions, they are definitely on the minds of the audience. Knowing the facts behind this case, viewers can appreciate the fact that at the end of Mostly Harmless, there ends up being no murderer, but perhaps many would agree that he may not have been such a lovely person after all.
The tone is supposed to be grand throughout the documentary, but it is not the case. Nonetheless, the alternative of ‘Mostly Harmless’ does provide some kind of solution, and there’s ongoing discussion surrounding how we should interpret this man’s weaknesses or his vices towards other people and himself. On the other hand, do we care for his vices towards other people, and is it fair to assess the subject of They Called Him Mostly Harmless based on the few incidents that other trekkers had with him?
The movie has a lot to offer regarding its critics sitting behind computer screens in the comment sections across forums, regarding their own fictionalized versions of the mystery alive, supported by facts, or just wanting to be nasty. They Called Him Mostly Harmless takes you on an adventure to the depths of the internet, yet also the depths of history in the journey of a man that many people find appealing but many people barely knew.
