The Wages of Fear Plot Summary
The Wages of Fear is a 2024 remake of the classic film which was in 1953. It is set in a makeshift, war-ravaged, Middle Eastern country. The film features Frank Gastambide in the role of Fred, Alban Lenoir as Alex, and Ana Girardot as Clara.
The story starts with Clara and Djibril on a quest to get medical supplies for their village’s refugee camp. As they are trying to enter the camp’s gates, they come under fire and are rescued by Fred. With these opening lines, lets us know that Clara and Fred are refugees living in a camp next to an oil well, which has flares since it is surrounded by the battlefield.

An oil well is shot at and starts to burn, with the potential for destruction goal imminent in a refugee camp. For that reason, the oil company opted to destroy the well to prevent fire from spreading, and to do so, they had to source a few high-grade explosives called Nitro-glycerine from a site which is 500 miles.
To do this, a team is created: Djibril and Clara from an NGO to assist them; Fred and Alex of the mercenaries, Alex as the one who deals with the blasts, Gauthier from the company and Alka who is Alex’s partner in work. For this mission, Alex was even released from prison. All these people were picked up by Anne Marchand who is in charge of this operation for the oil Company.
Why is Alex bitter about Fred?
Fred was employed about 9 months ago to escort a married duo out of the city but when he reached their residence, he discovered that Alex and Alka had been there already. Apparently, the duo had been in some illegal business and the cops came to their home and unfortunately killed them.
After all that mess, Fred talks to Alex and tells him that because of the chaos, it would be sensible to take the money which Fred had earlier observed in the couple’s residence. There is a lot of money in the locker but the code needed to protect the money cannot be retreived. It was blowing up to recover the dynamo. So Fred and Alex went back to the house to rob the couple. But as they try to leave with the money, the cops arrive.
Unceremoniously, there is a massive explosion as a result of which many police officers are killed in the blast and Fred takes off while Alex gets apprehended accusing him of the cops’ deaths. Due to this, Alex swears to Fred blaming him for having gotten him incarcerated and having to walk away from his wife and daughter.
So, what is the outcome?
The objective is to take 200 kilos of Nitro-glycerine from a 500-mile distance facility to the oil well. The demolishers only require 100 kilos to destroy the well, but carry an additional 100 ‘just because’. As nitro-glycerine is so dangerous that even one drop would cause an explosion, the team will take guidance from Alex on how to deal with it for an explosion.
Fred and Alex are in charge of driving the truck while the rest are in their escort. They meet numerous enemies on the route including terrorists, land mines, and the army. At one stage, however, there is room for further division: Gauthier and Fred take one route whereas Alex and Clara take another. At this stage, all the other escort members are deceased.
Though Fred has already completed his task and is supposed to receive his share, Gauthier turns around and tries to take out Fred. The truck, driven by Gauthier crashes off the cliff and the truck which was carrying him explodes. Now, the mission is solely to be carried out between Alex and Clara.
As the pair goes to the oil well, Fred is taken by them further, but upon reaching there, Anna, being the primary leader, places Alex’s family at the gun and dictates that Alex drive the nitroglycerine truck to the oil well.
Within the standoff period, both Fred and Anna shot from the back of the truck at Anna and her companion. He then sends the truck directly into the oil well which creates an explosion. The last scene displayed on the screen is that of refugees being escorted to a safer place.
