The Tearsmith (2024) Plot Summary Plot
Tearsmith is an exotic Gothic Italian movie based on a dark life fantasized in the book, Fabbricante di Lacrime by the Erin Doom. It starts in Grave, which is an abandoned orphanage with dark places and dreadful legends about the Tearsmith, a demonic craftsman who created the darkness in the souls of humankind and brought nightmares to life.
However, seventeen-year-old Nica can leave Grave and even its scary stories behind because she is finally accepted, or ‘adopted’ into a family that shows great affection, the Milligans. Sadly, she has to coexist with another orphanage orphan, Rigel, in the new place of shelter. The two have animosity toward one another but their traumatic bond and shared background have them yearning towards each other. And the chemistry between them making sure they stay close to each other doesn’t help either!
Why does Rigel pretend that he hates Nica?
Rigel takes Nica’s necklace when Miss Margaret, the owner of Grave Orphanage, asks him to get rid of it. He was also the one who took Nica’s hand and helped her when Margaret put her in a small room and locked her inside. He does not wish to hurt her, but he does so to protect her because he knows she will be in trouble when they argue. One of their companions Adeline knows but she has agreed with him to never speak about it.
Adeline is also aware that he had been adopted by the Milligans just to be near Nica. But he doesn’t want Nica to hear it, for it would ruin the family she has at last. To call him a monster is an understatement; he feels that Nica should keep away from him. As a last resort to this, he takes an oath not to adopt in the end.
What gives Nica the idea that she does not belong with the Milligans’ family?
Nica feels that there is an ugly side to her which is broken. In the orphanage, Miss Margaret would lock her in a room infested with insects to reduce her love for animals. Nica is shocked as she still suffers from PTSD whenever her foster mother Anna reaches for the belt. The very thought of having any affection towards Rigiel is a source of shame to her and she fears what the Milligans will think about her if they are ever aware.
However, Adeline is adamant that she has found her place, and has people who love her for who she is. When she is testifying in court for Miss Margaret’s abuses of her, she is made to confess her love for Rigel as well. She suffers a panic attack in the courtroom but Anna helps her breathe through it and does not shame Claudia for her emotions. With her declaration of love which helps to place away Margaret, she is satisfied with how things are and believes in a life with him one day.
Does The Tearsmith have some incest?
The film has crossed the normal boundaries of incest as Nica and Rigel are not siblings nor raised together to be siblings in the normal way. They fall in love when they are children in the orphanage. It is because of being adopted by the Milligans that the step-sibling trope creates danger and friction in the plot as they try to be with each other.
They try their best to avoid acting on their feeling because once the adoption papers are signed, they will be step-siblings in the legal sense. But this is solved when Rigel pulls out of the adoption before the school dance. So even in the end, when Nica and Rigel are together, they are not step-siblings.
What happens at the end of The Tearsmith?
The children of Grave intend to sue Miss Margaret for all the physical and emotional injuries. But some of them are scared by the threatenings of Margaret’s team and agree to false testimony. The trial is going bad because Nica under attorney’s pressure has to admit that she loves Rigel. She holds on though, and states that Margaret too made children watch their fellow child being tortured by her during the abuse.
That’s enough, and Margaret Miss is pronounced guilty. Nica rushes in to break the news to Rigel and he too comes out of the coma that he had fallen into during the struggle with Lionel, a bully. She understands that she has individuals who love her for her true self, and she sees herself and her future spouse Rigel in a family which is full of love and care.
