Stepdaughter Plot Summary
The film is about Joanna, a teenage girl who recently lost her mother and grandmother, the two most significant people in her life. Joanna’s biological father Michael Lawrence is a prosperous businessman who has now wed another successful business lady known as Whitney. Loneliness creeps to Joanna and with no other option, she decides to go to her father’s home.
Jonnie agrees to move in after Whitney happily invites Joanna to stay indefinitely. Joanna meets her stepbrothers as Lawrence comes and says her name. Joanna, however, doesn’t show any excitement as her intention to meet the Lawrence family is different altogether.
How does Joanna conduct her plans of destruction against Whitney and her family?
The next day, Joanna is seen helping with the arrangements for the deceased. However, on that day, an urn bearing Mrs. Whitney’s mother has been broken. Even in the beginning, Joanna was not ready to own up to her wrongdoing, but later on, she accepted she was responsible for the destruction of the urn. Joanna’s attitude is at least understandable according to Whitney. After telling her about these things to her sister Cass, Biancy advises her sister regarding Joanna.
But Whitney does not entertain the suggestion. The next day Joanna notices Whitney’s sample striking her cosmetics items that she intends on selling to Walmart for international display. The presentation takes another turn for the worse when one of the models is suddenly reported to have a bad allergic reaction which led to facial burns. Whitney attempts the recovery of the contract but it seems all was too late. That deal goes down the drain and losses are incurred against Whitney’s line of cosmetics.
During the night, a pack of Joanna’s fluvoxamine that was meant to be ingested for her obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is replaced by something other than what was medically prescribed. Whitney unknowingly takes the tablets that were previously replaced and becomes dizzy as well as fatigued. Lawrence instead offers to forego his real estate meeting to take care of her, but Whitney says Joanna and the children in her words “can attend to her”.
Eric grows increasingly suspicious of Joanna when he sees her trying to snatch Whitney’s credit card. Joanna however, threatens Eric, instructing him to forget everything he had just witnessed if only to redeem his mother’s safety. Then later, Joanna does everything in her powers to win the argument by throwing the word theft to Whitney whenever she is inquiring where her credit card went.
That same night, Joanna gets Eric, the eleven-year-old, to drink a beer mixed with something that causes him to collapse unconscious. She tries to toss him into the pool but does not see this completed as she sees Lawrence. But this is only the beginning as far as Joanna’s evil deeds are concerned. Incognito, she goes to buy things such as ropes, duct tape, and plastic body bags that thieves utilize when abducting their targets and disposing of them.
Also, when one of Brian’s buddies, Dante, discovers Joanna’s notebook, she takes him out in the same fashion by getting him in the head with a blunt object.
Why do Whitney and Michael not speak to each other anymore?
Whitney received a call from the laboratory where she had sent her samples for analysis together with her incredulity that the other samples were ok. She is surprised to learn that there are some other products where the levels of sodium hydroxide extract are alarmingly high, a corrosive compound. Quite reasonable, if Whitney would be so stupid as to use such compounds in her manufacture but she knows who does so; it’s Joanna.
Whitney orders Cass to run a private investigator search on Joanna. Eventually, it comes out that Maggie Dillon was her name, which is the name she, presumably has assumed alias. Thus says Lawrence, “The grandparents noted that Joanna had been adopted by them, so they changed her name.”
Whitney attempts to put Michael in the picture by stressing what Joanna has done to her, then the two have a falling out concerning the matter. As per Whitney, it is now very clear that Joanna/Maggie was the one on her cosmetics line of products.
How did Whitney end up in the hospital?
Joanna has made it her mission to ruin Whitney’s family. She sedates and deep cuts Whitney on her wrist to depict her as a paranoid and suicidal individual. Whitney, however, escapes the attack and requests her sister Cass to take her children, Brian and Eric, back to her house. While recuperating at the hospital, Whitney discovers that Joanna has been adulterating her BP drugs with cocaine.
This situation causes social services to be involved, potentially leading to Whitney losing her children’s custody. She also learns of Dante’s death while Cass assures her that Joanna is the reason for it. Cass goes to Whitney’s place to collect evidence against Joanna, who tries to push her from the first floor of the house.
So, what is the ending indeed?
Afterward, Joanna takes to Whitney’s phone line and threatens her over the phone. She tells Whitney to come to the house immediately and if she fails to do so, she will hurt Eric and Brian. But Whitney reaches the house and is grabbed by Joanna who intends to execute her plan. She admits to having pushed her Granny down the stairs and faking it as an accident. More shocking to note is that she plans to kill Whitney and her entire household and blame her for the murders instead.
But this is not the end of the scenario as Joanna is not alone. She says that her accomplice is her father, Michael Lawrence, known for marrying rich widows, killing them, and taking their money. Whitney is only one of Michael’s intended victims. But she goes insane when Joanna finds out that Michael was the killer of her mother too.
As Joanna grieves for her mother whom she thought to be a victim of a drunk driver, she is unaware that it was Michael who ordered her to be killed. Joanna, full of rage now, manages to drug Michael but he wakes up and assaults her. Suddenly, Joanna is in danger, but Whitney wakes up and shoots Michael in the back, and saves Joanna and herself. Towards the end of the movie, the Barri policemen arrive, Joanna is taken to a hospital, whereas Michael is quick enough to run away before being handcuffed to a chair.
