Plot Summary of the Kitchen

The action takes place in London in the future, a very bleak perspective of London which has no homes left. In addition, there are no hygiene facilities, not even a toilet. The main character, Isaac or Izi, belongs to a group known as The Kitchen who loot government lorries to get supplies for their collective community, whether it is food or medicine.

They are not exactly someone who the government would want to see, I mean, they would like them to leave The Kitchen and go elsewhere. One more thing, Isaac has a dream as well. And that is: Living in Southern California.

Nonetheless, Isaac has different plans of getting a 1-flat apartment in a top area of the place till the time he bumps into Benji, Toni Clarke’s ward, who happens to be Isaac’s ex-girlfriend. When Issac attended his mother’s funeral, Benzi saw him and wanted to speak to him as she thought Issac was her mother’s colleague. As much as Benzi tries to seek attention, Benzi has reasons as to why he should avoid contact with this woman. In this case, however, Benzi is more than willing to tolerate his harassment since he has heard stories about Issac from Tony.

What made Izi agree to take Benzi in?

Challengers don’t come to mind with the Kitchen etiquette since it’s an entirely new dimension of life, where cops pick up law-abiding citizens and criminals alike on raids for which they get severely beaten up. It’s one of the methods employed by the government to oust the remaining lower-class population of the Kitchen.

Among the residents of the Kitchen, there is one quietly addressed as the Kitchener, it is an elderly man who goes to the radio every day, calling on the inhabitants not to lose heart in the face of police brutality and to maintain high spirits. After participating in a group that helps to steal food and other necessities, Eli becomes part of the Kitchen.

They get taken to the police, but Isaac assists Benzi in escaping from the cops. Isaac doesn’t want Benzi to engage with such people and Benzi complies. He allows Benzi to stay with him for some time. This is the first time the two begin to form a friendship. The former also brings him to his workplace so that Benzi can assist Isaac in reaching his target and earning a generous commission.

Eventually, Benzi goes on to have a period of amicable fellowship with them where their struggles, achievements, and food are exchanged. Even see Isaac in one instance trying to get a 2 bedroom flat, the purpose being that Benzi should stay with him.

Eventually, Benzi admits that he understands that Isaac is indeed his father, and he dreads to think of the possibility of Isaac forsaking him the same way he had once done to Benzi’s mother. Well! Benzi’s mother is not completely wrong; not long afterwards, Benzi is left by Isaac who relocates to a new apartment building.

What becomes of Lord Kitchener?

Things go from bad to worse when the police come to the Kitchen and begin arresting and beating its denizens. In unfortunate circumstances, Lord Kitchener, the community’s greatest voice, didn’t survive since he was shot dead by the police.

This generates panic within the people of the community and many of them start vacating the Kitchen as a normal response to save their lives and safety. It is upon the death of Kitchener that Isaac gets to know that most people had turned up at the funeral home to pay respects to the man who worked so hard to inspire and give them hope.

After the death of Kitchener, Staples, a resident of The Kitchen, declares an all-out war against the police and the city. They desecrate properties, rob shops, individuals, and everything in between all in absolute obedience to Staples.

So what has happened to Isaac and Benzi?

It’s Kitchener’s demise that alters Isaac and he heads back towards the kitchen for Benzi. Sadly, right after their embrace, the violent band of thugs known as the Kitchen is besieged by the authorities once again. This time the police rush in, beating and arresting anyone in their way, causing panic as they push for evacuation. A few of Staple’s remaining men stand off against the police, intending to take them as soon as possible.

Then, Simmons gives the command for his troops to hurl rocks at the cops, and from what it looks like, Simmons has lost all reason and thinks the time has come to kill as many cops as he can to avenge Kitchener’s death. Isaac and Benzi on the other hand, are not spared and do not escape this onslaught. In an attempt to shield themselves, behind one of the doors, Benzi and Isaac hide where the son comes to terms that he is Benzi’s father.

Last, we hear a loud noise coming from one of the doors, which seems to indicate the presence of the police as we watch them pursuing the last few people, thus bringing the film to an end.
