The Casagrandes Summary
The movie starts with Punguari, a demigod and the lead character, who wishes to become a full-god. Although Punguari’s mom,, seems to be apprehensive about her daughter’s advancements into higher beings and states that Pungari should be ready before making such a leap. She explains the incident when Pungari was entrusted with watching over the moon and ended up doodling on it instead. Hence, she believes that Punguari still has some maturing to do.
Nonetheless, that is not the case for Pungari. She acts mischievously and absconds with her father’s staff as well as a magical mask in hopes that they will provide her with strength. Contrary to her expectations, her actions bring with them unfortunate consequences. She manages to open a portal to hell by accident. Pungari’s mother has no options left to consider, so she decides to turn Pungari into a boulder. According to Pungari’s myth, once freed, she is destined to detach chaos across the universe.
In what manner does Punguari get released?
Then we have a young girl, Ronnie, aged twelve, who feels like life is not taking her on any adventures. Noyon has a best friend, Sid, with who she skates constantly. The only issue Ronnie has is that she’s excited about the birthday gifts from her relatives, but it is not long before she learns that they will be traveling to Mexico almost right away, which dampens her spirit a bit.
This shatters the plans that Ronnie had of visiting a newly opened skate park with Sid, and instead she goes unwillingly with the family, complaining about how her cousins are sitting like she is seated. Their family came into the town right on time for the Festival of Fire, which is quite a big celebration that involves large fireworks amongst other things. Also as the streets are being scoured, she lays eyes on a beautiful stone necklace and impulsively trades her father’s present for it.
She has no idea what she has just done. This new necklace is something that she will never dream of possessing. Ronnie is skating up Punguari mountain when she falls and knocks a stone pendant off her necklace, which has a smaller one inside it. For the first few seconds, nothing appears to happen. But the next thing we know, the very earth begins to shake and Punguari has been unleashed. Nonetheless, this is when Ronnie and Punguari first meet, with Punguari in disguise claiming to be Shara.
What is Punguari after?
Everyone denies Ronnie’s claim that she accidentally let Punguari out the forgiven witch. But taking this opportunity, Shara or Punguari makes Ronnie believe that they have to go to the Mask of Many Faces before Punguari gets to it so she does not become an entire god. Ronnie agrees to assist them.
They go to the most obvious place where they think there exists a collection of the relics of the past: the museum. While rushing into the forbidden storage room, one of the gems brings them into a chamber with the mask. The gem flies off and clasps on to the mask, which switches it on. Shara then shows her true purpose and seizes the mask claiming she was always manipulating Ronnie.
Ronnie calls out Shara for her false statements, but Shara reminds her that she has always deceived her mother for the skates. Shara or Punguari, who now has the mask in hand, is looking to perform the rituals she was supposed to perform 800 years back.
Is Punguari of ill intent?
After discovering through Mama Lupe’s magic mirror that Ronnie was able to get trapped inside the museum, once more, with the help of Punguari’s father’s magic staff, Ronnie frees herself. Further, in the magical chamber, she comes across a manuscript opposingly stating that fire and destruction intended for the valley is not planned by Punguari but Ukumu, the god of the underworld. In this perspective, Punguari is not the enemy in this story; Ukumu is.
Holding the strength of the mask, Punguari molds a temple and a throne for herself without slightest awareness that she is freeing a wicked god which existed in the underworld. On the other hand, Ronnie attempts to talk sense out of Punguari and asserts the claim that Sisiki (mother of Punguari) was not trying to discipline Punguari but possessing the desire of protecting her from Ukumu.
Around 800 years from now, the parents of Punguari have even perished to save the valley from the wrath of Ukumu. After all, Punguari at some point does come to regret the error, accepting her stubbornness in listening to what everyone had to say. However, it is too late now, and Ukumu has risen from his long sleep.
Is it possible for Punguari & Ronnie to vanquish the evil God of the underworld, Ukumu?
The text that they came across in the hidden room revealed that the only opposing force to Ukumu who remains in the under world is possessed by a giant flaming piece of clothing that was last used by Punguari’s ancestors about 800 years ago to encircle him. Divided into two parties, Mama Lupe, Abuela and Ronnie’s Mom search for the chancla while the rest go for the sacred flame. Ronnie and Punguari decided that they would try to buy time until the rest of the family returned with the remaining artifact, and Ukumu should be kept occupied.
Even though the rest of the family brings back the artifact after a while, they do, however, combine the sacred fire with the chancla in the end. Ronnie and Punguari make use of the artifact to kill Ukumu, who now loses most of his powers and simply resides in the form of a skeleton. In a fit of rage, Ukumu swipes at Ronnie but she repels him with her staff and sends him back from where he was. Following that, Punguari destroys her temple and erects barriers made from the rubble to seal the entrance to the underworld.
We also learn that Punguari’s parents aren’t dead but have been petrified. They restore their godly forms, and Punguari regrets having brought them no satisfaction earlier. The movie concludes with people celebrating the Festival of Fire.
