Summary of the film Stolen

Elsa is a little Norwegian girl who comes from a long line of reindeer herders. The film shows her father teaching her to tame a white reindeer that she names Nastegallu. While she enjoys her time with her reindeer, she does little but worry as other herders’ reindeer go missing and are found dead.

One day, Elsa is walking back from school when she sees a man named Robert who is in the process of killing his reindeer, Nastegallu. The man catches a glimpse of Elsa and tells her that should she tell anyone what she saw, she will be the next one. Elsa’s brother has a suspicion of Robert but when he queries Elsa, she sits quiet, understandably terrified due to the threat.

In the police station the next day, Elsa learns that Robert who murdered the calf has police connections. Elsa keeps quiet about it, and the police have no option but to record the case as a theft due to lack of evidence in this instance. What is Lasse’s problem with Mattias working in the mines?

Ten years have passed and Robert has never quit illegally hunting reindeer for fun and often committing these barbarous acts on camera alongside someone. On the other hand, Elsa went ahead and took a job at the local school which was quite different from her career dream to become a reindeer Master like her father. Even though it was something she loved to do, she had to teach because her father made her believe that reindeer herding was for men.

Next in line to inherit Nils Johan’s reindeer is Mattias, who has other ideas. Take for instance the way he is happy to work in a mine as he believes it has greater earning potential then herding, which has no scope. Nonetheless, leaving the Sami people to work in the mines comes with disinheritance. A former Sammi, Lasse, the one who went to work in the mines, remarked so during the interviews, that they even strip you of your earmark.

Later on, Mattias and Els follow the blood trail to a shed there they call the police to search. This shed belongs to Robert, but the police don’t have a search warrant to check his barn anyway. He has made up his mind to lie claiming that the Sami have been butchering their reindeer to get compensated by the state.

But since Robert doesn’t get arrested again, Elsa can’t take this injustice and considers that she should have spoken the truth a decade back, so that he wouldn’t have managed to slaughter so many reindeer.

For what reasons is she not allowed to go to council meetings?

At a council meeting, Elsa loses her cool and accuses some of the people sitting there about the slaughters of the reindeer preventing her people from achieving their goals. Some of the locals, non-Sami, are keen on the government investing in the industrialization of this region providing jobs and jobs for everyone. But doing so would destroy the future of those who have become reindeer herders such as Nils Johan and others who are struggling hard as it is. Some of these are the reasons why some of people hate the Sami, and blame them for holding back the progress of others.

This frustrates Robert, and he begins to set up deer skulls along the highway verge so that all the motorists notice them. Then people begin to claim that the Sami people are yet again slaughtering their reindeer for insurance compensation. However, Elsa issues a media remark, claiming that it is the non-Sami people who have an issue with the Sami and therefore kill their reindeer as an act of provocation.

This claim does not go down well with the people and Elsa is prohibited from attending any more subsequent events. As if to highlight the situation somebody, most likely Robert, sets fire to the whole fodder of one reindeer herder.

And what happens to Robert at the very end?

One fine day, Elsa happens to see Robert putting carcasses of reindeer into the trunk of his car. She launches the video recording to use it later in court. When Robert gets to know this, he visits Elsa’s home and puts several rounds in the air as a warning. Around frightened Einstein rushes into the cellar and rings for the police, however before the police can come Robert reaches out to Elsa and threatens her.

He does not mince his words further and tells her that she should either shut her mouth or he might have to cut her throat like he did to Nastegallu a decade ago. This time, too, it is Robert’s lucky day because he once again avoids being captured by the police. They have been pretty useless at trying to protect her and exposing her to the hunters. It dawns on Elsa that she has now entered the game and it is time to take matters into her own hands. She resolves to bring Robert to justice. During the raid, she plans to unscrew the door to prove that he is a hunted and killed reindeer for fun. When she arrives, she is stunned to witness a room breeding dozens of reindeer corpses, refrigerator slopped, and walls stacked with flesh.

Unfortunately for Robert, he was never going to put up with such an invasion and had cameras set up in the room. The chase doesn’t last long as Robert’s snowmobile crashes through the ice into a lake. In her attempt to get him out with a rope, she fails in the end when she loses him through drowning. This time, all her facts are well supported and backed up with images and videos of their broken-down house that the authorities comprehensively investigated.

It comes to light that Elise Robert had been killing body-ers at least reindeer for more than a decade killing. The news doesn’t get to all of Roberts’s companions who are later also plunged to the police screen. Elsa however, reestablishes herself in the good books of the society, the town, and its people. Mattias on the other hand, accedes to talk to a professional on the issue of depression, with the recommendation coming from none other than Elsa.
