Will John Come To The Rescue Of His Wife Mary?

John and Mary are high school friends. Kingdom: The movie opens with a brief review of a timeline in which John and Mary’s characters met when still kids in school and then became couples. John has always been a sulking child whereas Mary would constantly find ways to make her frown turn upwards and after progressing over several years of dating throughout high school to adult years, they got wedded.

Nonetheless, their marital life takes a new turn when John starts acting like a self-centered, inconsiderate married man who is always working and feels every one of them should pay attention to him and always get the promotion at his workplace. To such an extent does John hate his wife and son, Austin, that work is the only thing that comes first in life.

Mary is a talented chef and has been to the best culinary schools and the best of restaurants they would very much like to be in their working team. She, however, abandons every opportunity to pursue her career, chooses to be a housewife, and looks after John. Mary’s relatives do not approve of that as she has just turned her back on her aspirations and tries to support John. She goes as far as making him cakes for his office events and he does not include her in the invite list. Also, she is forced to watch John’s colleagues over video calls because of John’s assistant.

So, does John eventually get the promotion he so desperately wanted?

John is obnoxious and has a very bad attitude spiced with anger towards the head of the independent department, which is the junior Vivian Pastrana. This is also noticed by his superior boss Hermie, who decides to promote him instead of John on his birthday. John gets drunk and is overwhelmed with anger at the fact that he decides to take on his boss in the men’s room.

As he is packing up his suitcase, Hermie informs him that he did not get promoted because he is moody and rude and has a sense of superiority. That is the reason why Hermie feels that dealing with clients from nations like China and Korea is not his cup of tea because of his attitude. John instantly resigns from his position and when he starts clearing his desk, Vivian walks into the room. She starts flirting with John, and in response, John says he wants to give her a goodbye kiss, before kissing her passionately. His secretary takes a short video of the kiss, as it happens while hiding.

How does John’s wife die?

On her way to school, Mary notices some boxes lying in John’s car, and knowing that she is supposed to take him to work once she gets to school, a fight breaks out as she is unable to explain to him the job proposition she received in Singapore. The fight reaches its highest level when Hannah later sends Mary a clip of John’s kiss with Vivian.

Mary is irate, and he unclips his seat belt vowing he will jump out of the car if John does not let her out. John tries to justify his actions claiming that it doesn’t mean anything and that she should trust him. John is not focused on driving; he does not see a man run in front of his car, and while trying to miss him collides with a tree. Since Mary was not wearing her seat belt, she was propelled out of the windshield. Mary is taken to the hospital, but unfortunately, she does not make it out alive.

Who is Lodz, and what does he offer John?

After Martha’s death, John is so distressed that he is unable to get anything out when he is about to address the audience and repeats the word ‘sorry’ to Mary. After the funeral, he continues to drink at home, making Mary’s mother take Austin away. As he is about to leave, Austin hands over the picture of Lodz to his father and requests him to offer a prayer to ‘Lodz.’ which pleases him to know that he wants to be friends with him.

Having seen some images depicting him with Mary, John grudgingly snaps the photograph, places the image on the tabletop and starts complaining about how he misleads his friends and lets them down. Out of nowhere, a man who looks like the one in the picture addresses him, stating that he never assured Austin that he would get back his mother.

The man names himself Jess but adds that children refer to him as Lodz. He explains that he came to finish some light fixtures that Mary had ordered before John’s birthday, and since Mary had already covered the costs, he asked John what exactly he had to do. John gives him a drink, and some conversation ensues. Lodz goes on to propose allowing John to redeem himself by sacrificing Mary but she has to be the one to die. After some contemplation, John decides to strike a bargain with the man where Mary lives, but John will die the day Mary dies.

Is it true that John hands his life over so that his wife can be saved?

Several members were silent as John and Mary drove to the venue of the school play. However, after some time, John understands that Mary’s life is of great value to him, and makes his last prayer. Mary is compelled by John to promise him she will relocate to Singapore, fulfill her ambitions, and see to it that Austin becomes a great pianist. When the events unravel the rewind begins, however, John can avert the crash and they survive together. John is ecstatic at the fact that both of them live, he hugs Mary thanking Lodz that they are still alive.

Mary and John were lucky to attend the school play where before the performance he gave his son his grandfather’s watch and wrapped his arms around him.

But John knows that Mary didn’t die in the crash but at a hospital at three o’clock. He glances at his watch, noting that he has less than ten minutes remaining, and his once-stoic heart begins to beat louder with anticipation. John looks around, spotting Lodz, who is at the entrance of the hall, and with a nod he assures John that the time limit will be over soon.

As Lodz is about to leave, Johnny bolts to him and begs him not to make him go without seeing and embracing his son. How tale went to dole that sorrow, so he approaches just because of the mother and the son. Seems like it is an agreement that will make Mary create the dream restaurant and hire people and her brother will grow up to be a successful violinist in demand mounted to numerous concerts which he would dedicate everything to his father.

John makes peace with himself and accepts his fate. John’s son is the first to discover him collapsed after his play, lying on the floor in the hallway. Mary, in a speech delivered at his memorial, states she is grateful their marriage took place so early as Lodz fully understands that the couple was not destined to survive into wooden old age together.

What happens at the end of Rewind?

In the epilogue, after the death of John, Mary is professionally trained as a cook and gets to fame. Austin completes his academic qualification, makes a name for himself as a pianist, gets married, and becomes a father, naming his firstborn son John. As the years go on, Mary also ages but still misses John deeply; in the very last scene of the film, she is shown dancing with the image of her beloved husband.

In contrast, Rewind does not treat the idea of being able to live life again as a miracle; it’s not a miracle. It’s an opportunity to get things right but at the expense of life. John can say goodbye to his family one last time and show them appreciation that has been devoid for many years. It is a chance for Austin to be filled with hope and follow his father’s legacy and a chance for Mary to achieve everything that her resentful husband couldn’t provide her with.

It’s easy to think that if John had been left to survive after the events, he’d wind up as a remorseful and regretful Joe who abused alcohol while also being a horrible father who would only hurt Austin as a result. But given John’s guilt and the transformation that he impacts in just one single night, it seems quite ridiculous for his story to end in such a depressing way as satisfying. Jeanie’s husband’s death would have meaning if he actively chased after her ambitions and their child’s dreams which would have been a much better conclusion to an already touching film.
