My Loneliness Has Wings is Mario Casas and Deborah Francois have co-written a Spanish drama film. It is evident that Spanish actors like Mario Casas, who has performed very well in films like Bird Box Barcelona, The Innocent, and The Invisible Guest, have mainly taken the role behind the scenes in My Loneliness Has Wings, considering it a directing debut

The movie delves into the psyche of their complex characters. It portrays the depths and challenges of their untamed creative spirit and the efforts that are needed to sustain temperament in today’s world. It illustrates that these artists can indeed transform what they do in a way that helps us comprehend the world in an entirely different manner, provided the right people are there to assist them.

The first note of this sad tale about an artist depicts Dan (Oscar Casas) as a street artist who engages in pickpocketing and petty theft to make ends meet. He is seen accompanying his friends Vio (Candela Gonzalez) and Reno (Farid Bechara) when they prowl the streets and more often than not get into clashes with the police.

Once they are free from the prison of their responsibilities, they go back to the pubs, which is the place where the comrades share their loot and enjoy the darkness of the sky. Dan too possesses a sketchbook depicting blood thrusters of himself accompanied by beautiful pictures of all over the world he knows he would never be able to see in real life. Being a joker, Dan aims to kill that the greater part of the working day dips out on the street. The remaining time is spent sketch painting.

Also, Dan’s creativity in case he possesses any is satisfied by making art and sharing it on his YouTube channel. He hopes to become a full-blown artist and stop relying on stealing and other crimes. But there is still a case for possessing less number of stressors for Dan as this still has not stopped him from dealing with his drunk and aggressive father.

The film does ensure simplicity in plotlines and the sequencing of events. It takes its time to get us acquainted to the characters and their perspectives. But in the end, as the movie moves on, it’s not very common that any further character apart from the main character, Dan is introduced. He’s well-written, both physically and emotionally.

Throughout the movie, we witness Dan running from the police after attempting to commit a robbery gone wrong. While Vio and Reno, his friends, decide to quit, Dan does it without a care and pulls off an even bigger robbery. Dan is one of those characters that are interesting to watch because you want to learn more about him. Other supporting characters like Vio and Reno are also good people and they are Dan’s pillars, always by his side in events of any calamity.

After Dan leaves the house because he is angry at his father, the first person he contacts is Vio. She never cares to know about the reasons; she loves him regardless. Even when Vio’s landlord tends to trouble her, she stands still, with Dan’s head beside her. It is this kind of loyalty and mending that allows Dan to have faith in them more than what they offer.

While it is clear that the supporting characters worked with Dan to accomplish his desires, not much is known about their ambitions or why they cherish Dan so much. Vio and Reno have struggled hard and they should receive more than a cut of the stolen money. A little more details could have been provided for the rest of the plot as well.

The performance of the cast in the movie manages to take everything else away from the screen. The performers get it right since the movie is about them and they play their parts perfectly. They narrate the life of each character through the finer details of each character. For example, Francisco Boira, aka Padre Dan.

At first glance, he appears to be a fairly average looking man, however a misapprehension since the look in his eyes reveals volumes. The first appearance of Padre Dan begins with silence but his piercing glare indicates his psyche is far more evolved than the average man. When he wants to communicate something, he does not have to say it.

My Loneliness Has Wings is a truthful insight into the life of artists, and tells the unsweetened truth about the endless struggle within their art, a largely unrecognized struggle. The film is not only about art, it also explores deep issues such as children’s mental well-being and the other consequences of poor parenting.

My kind of films are the ones where there is a single protagonist, who is the driving force of the entire story, when it is more character-driven, like in Taxi Driver or Raging Bull films. In those cases, this film is not one you will regret watching. Simply take a leap of faith.
