Rudy Mancuso escorts the viewers through a melody’s beat.
Musica is a romantic comedy film that stars a Brazilian-American immigrant student named Rudy who lives in Newark. Right at the start of the movie, Rudy is a boy sitting at a diner with his girlfriend Haley and a classmate. She and Rudy sigh with folded hands as she explains how they plan to live outside of Newark, moving into the suburbs.
The young man is normally fickle in attention does not make an effort to focus on a single point and avoids directing his eyes towards any one person. Kinds of noise which include kitchen noises, banging crockery noises, and people moving around all compose in his head like a kind of pattern. Rudy is in such trouble now as he believes that these sounds are life and as a result he ignores Haley. Now the girl is furious and leaves him because she believes that hurting him in this way will teach him a lesson.
Rudy’s mother, Maria, however, instead of feeling upset by the breakup, looks for solutions. She is quite positive that her son wouldn’t want to stay single and in response to such assumptions, she introduces him to a nice Brazilian girl. However, Rudy is at somewhat of an impasse because it seems to him that all he wants to do is create and perform with puppets. His lifelong friend, Anwar, could divert him from the unreasonable approach, but their native distinctive philosophies snatched the control out of Rudy’s hands and brought him to Isabella. They feel an insane connection to each other. Nevertheless, Rudy finds himself a little conflicted because he still has feelings for his ex, Haley, whom he wishes to make up with.
Musica is an autobiography that captures Rudy’s life journey. He narrates how he started incorporating puppets and music into his life after he developed a habit of hearing melodious tunes around during ordinary tasks. The book delves into his life as he tries to juggle being a music maker and puppeteer with the different aspects of the world, such as family, romance, and society.
This story is about coming of age for Rudy, who has synaesthesia, where sounds trigger the visual response. And for Rudy, sounds transform into rhythms, and that gives him a uniqueness to his character. In this way, the film depicts the difficulty Rudy has in linking with other people but rather becomes distracted somehow involuntarily.
Thus, Musica also has a reasonably good romantic tale that is quite entertaining. Besides, the film delicately depicts Brazilian culture in Newark through nice neighborhoods full of nosy neighbors, affectionate women, and beautiful and vibrant urban streets accompanied by traditional Brazilian music and instruments.
According to his account, the most important experience Rudy brings to the screen is living with synesthesia. He’s naturally withdrawn and impulsive and his performances are astonishingly spontaneous. In the film, the character he is playing makes rather cowardly decisions which seem to place him as a person of indecision and unkindness. Either way, needless to say, he is creative and his performances are remarkably interesting.
Rudy and Isabella make a great pair and their chemistry seems so real even in front of the camera. Isabella herself is a beautiful, humble, and kind-hearted woman. She is in support and understanding which helps Rudy try to bring her into his universe. She respects his feelings and his devotion to his ideas which adds to the emotional aspect of the film even if she doesn’t understand what he sees.
However, the complementing characters, such as Haley, Mari, and Anwar are all designed to enhance the impact of Rudy’s emotions and enable the audience to comprehend his feelings better.
Musica is a beautiful synonymous work that is both a musical as well as a romantic film. Its the production and the photography that brings the audience back to the theater as they remind us of the importance of props, costumes, setting, and most importantly the love of cinema.
The biggest disappointment of the eye is the ending, how rushed can it get? It is not fair that the audience cannot see the evolution of how Rudy develops from puppetry acts on subways to his sold-out performances. Nonetheless, every other aspect of Musica works and they manage to showcase Rudy’s brilliance through stunning cinematography and a clever script.
