Maboroshi Plot Summary
Maboroshi is Mari Okada’s latest coming-of-age story which dedicates much of its content to a city trapped in time. Masamune and his friends are joyfully studying together, but everything goes wrong when there is an explosion at one of the town’s factories. As they attempt to investigate, a light comes from nowhere and they find themselves at the same place minutes earlier. The kids move out of the house to try and make sense of things, and witness that the sky is cracking apart and an animated dragon-like smoke is trying to put things right.
From that time onwards, seasons do not autonomously pass and people too do not change. Even students are expected to keep regular self-surveillance and submit weekly self-reports. Nevertheless, one day Mutsumi, who is a classmate of Masamune, introduces him to Itsumi, a girl who has never been free from the reign of the city’s steel factory. That particular incident causes the lives of him and everybody’s in the trajectory of change forever in the most unimaginable manner.
What is the conclusion of Maboroshi?
Masamune and the focal point of the city realize that the supposed city or their city is a mere reflection of the reality surrounding them. The days on end don’t seem to be that progressive as everything mortuary is strewn in the land and the smoke tries to hold it still.
The last part of the movie narrates the story of the main cast discovering that Itsumi is actually from the real world. The major characters give a fight and manage to put her on the train of the town, which would take her to the real world. Masamune and Mutsumi can put the girl in a secure life where she will transform and age. They have a problem though, the city is frozen in time and so they too will not enjoy such privileges.
The final scene of Maboroshi closes on a matured version of Itsumi. She phones her father whilst in Mifune, which is Masamune’s area. After finishing a conversation over the phone, she hails a cab to the site of the factory. Looking at the abandoned factory, she remarks that it’s the location where her heart is broken for the very first time.
Toward the movie’s conclusion, Itsumi is made clear to be the daughter of Masamune and Mutsumi as she is in reality. Her teenage selves ended up there through no fault of her own. Masamune’s father was among those who discovered her and his partner was all for keeping her that way.
The idea is to bring back to the present age she is now to prevent their older self from suffering. Even without getting used to the same type of life, what matters is seeing her with a smile.
Still, we don’t see or understand what occurs to her right after she comes back to her world for now, but it is safe to assume that she will find peace, having been through what she has been through.
