Love, Divided plot summary

Valentina, who has recently experienced a breakup, is moving into her new house at the opening of the movie. In these challenging times, she is helped by her cousin Carmen, who also manages to find her a job at a bar in their neighborhood. Valentina moves in next to a man, David, who is a very private person and has not gone outside his room for ages. He has quite a reclusive lifestyle and has only his cat as a pet.

It appears that David is a game designer with a reasonable claim to fame from designing a game called ‘Breaking Mind’, although he is now working on a new game, which his mate, called Nacho, probably thinks is to brainiac to be completed. Nacho is a little worried about David’s self-imposed solitude and asks him to participate in social activities, but David stands his ground. Quite alarming however to Nacho is the fact that David has no companions except for him and a cat.

Having found an empty bedside table in her new apartment and very annoyed by the noise caused by the occupants of the next-door apartment, Valentina is cajoled into sleeping at her ex-boyfriend’s house. The next evening Valentina goes back to her apartment and she straight goes to her neighbor and complains about the noise. The guy turns out to be quite humorous and starts talking about ghosts, however, he later adds that Valentina’s other neighbor, who is across her apartment, is the source of the irritating noise.

What did he use to accomplish that? How does it ring a bell now? Jesse Perkin’s video will suffice.

Instinctively, David turns into an explosive and rambunctious individual by nature, rather irritable and active too. Valentina has no such experience or background, neither professionally nor amateur. She outright disapproves of such outlandish actions. The dull season is when she is at her most vulnerable, which drives her crazy. ‘David, don’t you remember what Valentina said last time when you asked her to come see us? There was a very good reason why she left her last job.’

When David starts creating songs on pans and other metal utensils, she goes ahead and sets a metronome on her wall, which is constantly ticking 24/7. Eventually, David jaw embracing his defeat, asks Valentina to switch off the metronome. Moreover, he concurs with Valentina regarding the division of working times, so they do not get on each other’s nerves. The proposed schedule states that Valentina would first practice the piano before leaving for work and upon her exit, David would pounce on his game development tasks.

David & Valentine, in what ways do they become friends eventually in the course of this project?

David is not the most easygoing person around people but thanks to him, they quite know one or two things music. It is very helpful in this case as David could hear Valentina’s keystrokes on the piano while trying to repeat Beethoven: something was incorrect. Beethoven’s music was pain and a surrendering cry; however, to Valentina’s dismay, she played it mechanically with no affection and no soul. At the start, she did not give in to David’s ideas; however, narrowing it meant that she got to where he was coming from. They soon begin talking to each other through the wall.

David discloses that he is one of the creators of a new game, Ultimax. In the meantime, Valentina expresses her aspirations of becoming a musician and highlights her desire to be top-notch in concert preparations. Valentina revisits her previous career as a singer-songwriter who created music, however, had to abandon it on the insistence of Oscar, her boyfriend and a musician, to concentrate on piano.

To some extent, Valentina is crafting the fantasies of Oscar, which is not the case in the original vision. They are friends now, and they have started to appreciate each other’s company rather than feel disgusted at each other. Valentina practicing or tuning the piano is no longer a point of antagonism for David and vice versa. Valentina is unfazed when David makes his typical soughing noises.

Since Valentina hasn’t heard from David, she substitutes him for one of her customers, and mistakenly makes plans with a different guy. She prepares a nice dinner for him, but upon hearing him speak, she understands her error and expels him. One of Valentina’s common practice hunches seems to be talking to David in an entire context. When David invites Valentina to a dinner date, she chooses to maintain the status quo, which is close but not merged.

‘They have become a couple without actually meeting. They share their lives by irritating the position of their beds to the edge of the wall and having memories of their past children and their favorite coffee and games. We even see them having relatively identical dinners in their respective kitchens. When Carmen and Nacho learn this, they feel a little embarrassed but at the same time think it to be somewhat romantically intended.’

What are the reasons that Valentina chooses to move out?

Moving on, it has already been mentioned that Valentina has always wanted to sing songs as her profession, but her boyfriend Oscar almost compelled her to become a pianist. This completely disregards what Valentina’s actual vocation was which is singing and composing her songs. She thinks that all her life should be in gratitude to Oscar, that is why she entirely neglects a dream she had. Every so often, there comes a reminder for Valentina what her old dream was but this time, there is no chance she would work for it.

She continuously craves Oscar’s endorsement and worries that if he has something negative to say about a piece, it is indeed negative, and conversely, if he approves of a piece, it is the embodiment of perfection. Valentina contacts Oscar gets access to him and hopes he’s going to give an opinion about “Hummingbird”, but instead of just hearing it, Oscar moves closer to her. This annoys Valentina and she throws him out. After Oscar departs from David, he tries to make out with Valentina who looks like Oscar’s simply trying to rule over her, but she processes it all wrongly and in the end, they quarrel.

The situation escalates when Carmen collapses in Valentina’s apartment bedroom with a male companion and David mistakenly assumes that they are Oscar and her sister. Valentina attempts to offer an explanation that fails, and they part ways. Valentina also feels that the time is due for her to find new accommodation.

Do David & Valentina get back together?

David has been hanging out with Nacho and has had the chance for a self-assessment. He realizes how much he wants Valentina. So, he comes to her audition advising her to be herself and sing her heart out. It is only now in the series that time, finally, Valentina gets to know the truth in David’s words that all along, she’s been working her heart out to achieve someone else’s desire out of fear to go after her own. Rather than play a piece of Beethoven’s composition, she performs her composition that shocks everyone, including, Carmen, Nacho, and David.

Although the judges say that her piano performance was not that impressive, one of them admires her beautiful voice and offers Valentina the number of a producer. Once again, in this situation, Oscar is desperately attempting to control Valentina but she refuses to let anybody dictate her life. Valentina returns to her apartment and David and Valentina confess their love for each other in a very unique way.

They resolve to remove the partitioning wall separating their two apartments so that two rooms will eventually become one seamless unit. Valentina shifts to David’s side and the picture concludes with the two of them who have been yearning for this moment forever finally kissing each other.
