Little Wings Plot Summary
The film drops us into the life of Kaitlyn McKay, a messy backbencher daydreamer who often forgets her assignments and projects. She is scolded several times by her homeroom teacher asking her to stop being lazy, as she simply cannot afford to be held back. Further straining the life of Kaitlyn is the divorce between her parents and the move out of their family’s home by her mother.
After all of this, Kaitlyn still is looking forward to receiving an iPhone from her father’s partner of sorts as a comforting gesture. But this goes against her expectations when her mother’s boss, Ben, instead hands her a pair of racing pigeons that had been presented to him.
Why does Kaitlyn steal Granger?
Through the course of events, Kaitlyn’s boyfriend Adam develops an obsession with the racing pigeons and spends an entire night researching their intriguing characteristics. He finds out that these pigeons are extremely unique and endorsed by various prominent personalities including Mike Tyson and Jaan Vari. Granger, who is Jaan’s favorite pigeon, is quite important in terms of lineage as he has produced a succession of superior racing pigeons.
In an attempt to free her mother’s home from impending foreclosure, Kaitlyn proposes kidnapping Granger and then selling him. Adam is persuaded to assist not only due to the risks but also because Kaitlyn promises to let him kiss her. An obstacle arises when Jaan sees them on his rooftop, but they are still able to acquire Granger. After this episode, Adam makes it very clear that he will not have any further contact with Kaitlyn or the feathered creature.
Granger is eventually put up for sale by Kaitlyn, who has now hired Kiril, a Russian-American student from her school, to do it through the Russian Pigeon Mafia. But she only bargained for twenty-five grand, which means she still needs seventy-five grand more.
What had kept Jaan quiet about the fact that Maddie was unaware of the theft completed on Zoran?
Kaitlyn lives in Jaan’s house, and when Jaan is about to let the world know that because of Kaitlyn, his pigeon has been robbed, he opts not to tell anyone that Kaitlyn has taken his pigeon. Jaan lies to Maddie that there is a lot of competition in hurting pigeons and that if he buys one he will build a pigeonry in her backyard. But privately, Jaan is furious at Kailyn and demands to know where his pigeon is.
Kaitlyn is caught spinning another story that Adam has it. Jaan also tells her that she better return the pigeon by Friday or he will tell Maddie the entire story. This option leaves Kaitlyn in a tough spot while trying to decide how she will obtain Granger and still preserve her mission for her mother’s home. On Friday, Kaitlyn tells Jaan that she has sold his bird to the Russian Pigeon mafia. Kaitlyn says she does not care anymore if Jaan spills the beans on her mother.
It’s clear how much Jaan loves the bird. Kaitlyn’s actions have only crushed him. It is also disclosed that Jaan has been diagnosed with lung cancer. Still, Jaan decides against telling Maddie about any of this as it will only complicate issues even further between a mother and daughter who has already done one foolish thing. But as Kaitlyn comes back home, she discovers that somebody has already made an offer on the house and her mother is about to accept it.
Will Jaan Vari ever get his bird back?
After forming a close bond with her pigeons Romeo and Charlie Ticket, Kaitlyn understands what Jaan must be going through. She opts to assist Jaan in finding Granger, but Adam intervenes, saying he is not doing it and wants nothing to do with it. So, Jaan and Kaitlyn drive off towards the pigeon club to find out whether anything is being said about Granger. On the way there, Jaan even got Kaitlyn’s bird entered into the next race while there.
Kaitlyn has a flashback about a mistake she made previously when she saw the Russian Pigeon Mafia. The grief once again seems to be comforting her because she promises to get her bird Granger back. Adam did not agree to participate in any more heists so Kaitlyn asked her more relaxed brother, Matt. After some crafty improvisation, Matt can penetrate the warehouse and free the bird.
The event holds a lot of significance for Matt as he can smile after a long period of around 2 years. As Kaitlyn drops the bag full of money, she starts crying as he fears losing her home. On their way back, the mafia stops them from escaping and Jaan is forced to let go of Granger. Unfortunately, the bird does not return to Curtis’s thread house.
What about the conclusion?
Definitely, for all the wrongs that Kaitlyn did, she ended up earning a wonderful companion and best friend in the process who she will forever cherish. Jaan constructed a loft for Kaitlyn’s pigeon, hid the theft from her mom, and even taught Kaitlyn how to race pigeons. Jaan transformed Kaitlyn into a good woman, someone who she was proud of and someone who inspired her.
Jaan makes Kaitlyn understand the essence of life as he tries to explain to her, that irrespective of the trouble we face, there is always a silver lining to the problem, as it can lead us back home, which means finding ourselves. Granger has gone back to Kaitlyn’s house as the film progresses. Jaan tells Kaitlyn to look after Granger well, for he has a home, and it is here. Maddie as well has a change of heart towards selling the house after being stunned to receive a payment from her spouse.
