June (2023)

Always ‘Press On’ with June Carter Cash This week, another addition is made to the set of forthcoming music-dedicated documentaries by Paramount, with the film June. It is an overwhelming story about country music royalty June Carter Cash. Her husband, Johnny Cash. We know his story. That’s a story that has been over-told and overdone over the years. But June simply has never gotten her due with her rightful due tale. Her being a Carter, her being brought as a Carter, her being famous and more importantly, her might as a songwriter all destroyed her praise.

In case you have not yet seen the film Walk the Line with Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as its leading stars, then, not known by you may be the fact that the Ring of Fire song sung by Johnny Cash was written by June Carter Cash, Johnny Cash’s wife. It is one of the most famous American countries, that is not even disputed anywhere across the globe.

In this song, which is assumed to have been composed when she fell out of love with her second husband, and while Cash was also married, she changed her stance to Cash’s. Both were in show business and became close over time. It is known that June in particular was instrumental in helping Johnny to get off drugs and get his life back on the right track.

In modern times, it is somewhat of an idealistic story. The singer ends nowhere as she’s the ex-wife of an iconic country music figure. This is not new for her as she’s career-minded due to having one of the most famous, if not the most famous flag bearers in the industry, in her family. We follow a period of Ruth’s life before the moment when Johnny starts her career, which, we must assume, the movie does cover parts of her story.

By the time she met Cash, she had already had two unsuccessful marriages. Even while married, she shifted to New York City to pursue acting and flew back to Nashville on weekends to perform at the Grand Country Music Opry, then back to New York in the week due to the trouble.

June appeared never to have lost a beat because it seems that she always was a ‘go-getter’ no matter what. Hence, one can understand why one of her final albums is called “Press On.” In and out throughout the album’s reclamation in the film, the recording of an album accompanies which June did quite late in her life to great applause. The anticipation surrounding the release of the album is expected to bag many awards and be critically acclaimed, which was not its original goal.

The documentary in focus claims through its narrative and Junie herself that Juliana was not just the spouse of Johnny Cash, and sadly enough, it is true, that she was much more than that. For the last twenty years since her passing, there has been no one to fill that gap in the world of country music. Such a death, which made a lot of people fully aware of the fact that in due time John would do the same, and he did just four months later.

Carter’s biography, however, has experienced some cutbacks, which for sure darken and shadow the peace and tranquility that she was looking forward to. She did wish for another battle as well. As it may not have been graphed within the story of the film, marriage with Cash is not a very important topic of the movie, but it is. She claims that was all very good before embers rose to the surface when they were not. There is a relapse that has occurred for quite a decade, and they may have scattered.

The audience can pay attention to the documentary about June, which is very good, to the icon who could have certainly received much more now but was unfortunately overshadowed in her own life’s story by a bigger than life figure. June walks in gently, but if you are a country music watcher, then within this film, you will find that there are not any new insights. It is quite delightful, to say the least, that a very worthy figure who was given less help than she ought to has been made the focus in the first place.
