Irish Wish Summary
Irish Wish is worth watching if you are a fan of Lindsay Lohan and love romantic comedies. The film poses an interesting question: why can’t we dream of a perfect love story and believe that it is possible to achieve one?
It may be a foolish question, but the sizzling chemistry between the stars is quite enough to keep you entertained until the end.
Who does Maddie want to be with?
Maddie is a passionate woman who loves writer Paul and edits (read: writes) his novels. There are sparks between the two, but she is frightened of approaching him. She bemoans her opportunity and ultimately loses it to her friend, Emma, who instigates the romance.
A few months later, Paul is about to marry Emma, and the two are ecstatic about living happily ever after. Maddie, on the other hand, rather reluctantly attends the wedding and sighs in disappointment. During the ceremony, she discovers a Wishing Chair and is approached by a rather eccentric woman (who we find out is Saint Brigid) who urges her to wish. It alters her destiny forever.
Is Maddie’s dream worth clearing the smoke for?
On second thoughts, it is less of a dream and more of a nightmare. Maddie doesn’t know anything about Paul and in any case, he is not the right type. In her futile effort to find Saint Brigid, Maddie unexpectedly lands in the lap of James, quite literally.
Maddie first had an accidental run-in with James at the airport, regarding a misplacement of luggage. James seems to have completely changed his entire character, today he supports Paul Kennedy, and the event he was meant to photograph has been canceled. In any case, Maddie and Paul hire him as their wedding photographer.
How does fate bring Maddie and James across the curves?
The two also become relatively close on accounts of time spent together, and when a timber causes them to miss their plane and return home, Maddie lies vertically with James over a chicken cottage.
He doesn’t like her kissing scenes that much when she returns for the rehearsal in the morning and is still preoccupied with thoughts about James, bailing out on her kiss with Paul.
As she sees the Saint Brigid statue on the stained-glass window behind her, winking, she loses consciousness. When she awakens, she says the first word that comes to her tongue “James” which explains where her thoughts are.
As it so happens, James and Maddie take leave of one another on a sour note, and to worsen the already-off situation, Maddie’s mother is late (due to her oversleeping) and is late for the meeting. Unfortunately, she is complicated by Saint Brigid when she tries to leave the airport and reach Ireland.
Does Maddie see that she erred?
Yes, Maddie is now beginning to see that her and Paul’s incompatibility is more than superficial. He has even composed and sent to her his wedding vows. As for James, it is apparent that he has a soft spot for Maddie and cannot erase her from his mind. She sees Paul and Emma engaged in a phone conversation outside, deep in the night.
They creep away with forlorn feelings; when Paul moves off, Emma is seen starting to cry. It would appear that in every dimension, no matter what marriage arrangement you have, as a certain character in Jurassic Park said, “Life uh, finds a way”.
Maddie has some strong feelings about marrying Paul, which James picks up on the other hand. They talk in the gardens, and he urges her to stand her ground and call off the wedding, confirming that saying “this is his dream come true” just rubs the disunity in a little more.
What follows the wedding?
The wedding happens, and during this time, Maddie is informed of something by the priest. She tells the priest that she had wished for Saint Brigid who for some strange reason was said to have shards of humor. It is said that she usually does not give people what they want, but gives what they need; Thus, this is also a lesson that love can come from the most bizarre places. Following this, Maddie and Emma talk about destiny and their perspectives on it, and bit resonates with each other; fortunately, they do not have to worry so much about the distance between them now.
To begin with, Maddie states that she will not marry anyone, and as such does not change her clothes even when walking down the aisle. She declares her viewpoint to everyone within the limits of tolerable speech.
This does not come as a surprise since she believes both of them are interested in one another while she is the one who is infatuated with Paul. There is a considerable amount of drama that unfolds between James and Paul concerning the new book that Paul intends to claim as his creation.
Fortunately, Maddie’s mother is not in attendance to witness such an epic mess, she is in the hospital owing to an incident involving Saint Brigid of all people.
What steps does Maddie take to resolve this chaos?
In the end, Maddie then takes an even bolder step. She runs after James and plants a kiss on his lips. But despite the romance of it all, James decides to walk away as this is not how he envisioned this scenario going down.
As for Maddie, her husband is still in her dreams though this time she is not prepared to wait any longer. Instead, she goes to the Wishing Chair and calls St. Brigid. She desires to have “her wish unwished” so to speak.
Saint Brigid enjoys torturing her and instead gives her a chance to live out her fate. Maddie stands up from the chair and shouts “Take back my wish!” It seems to have worked.
Does this finally mean that Maddie’s wish was fulfilled?
All is back to normal, Paul weds Emma, Maddie lets go of the victim mentality and even tells Paul off. She concludes that she needs to be the one to pen her drama in more ways than one.
Maddie goes to the Irish pub, but James has already gone. Later she bumps into him again in town and decides to stay a little bit longer and put her narrative. James too is willing to stay as he has already come to the fact that they have more in common than she initially assumed.
As it was obvious to us, the two get together like a house on fire and wow, things are taking turn as the two go about their business exploring what more is around the corner.
There is little more that we do not see but that which we can guess, the two do take off and explore the wide wide world. For Maddie, writing is one of her dreams and travel is the best teacher. On the other hand, James is a photojournalist and there’s no doubt he will be dispatched to many countries. Seems like this was always in the books!
