Anyone who is aiming to go into acting, directing, or show business in general should be ready to face enormous amounts of hurdles. They must be even more daunting if you’re an outsider. Now imagine being an aspiring filmmaker who is an outsider and a female as well, all at the same time. It is a tough battle even if you’re a supremely talented one.
The American drama First Time Female Director takes such huge liars for their harsh reality and starts to laugh. It’s a one-woman show in the fullest sense of the phrase because Chelsea Peretti made everything the writer, the director, the producer, and the lead actress. The film was released in the theaters in 2023 and was available on the Roku channel on 8 March. Running for 1 hour 36 minutes is an interesting study of the obstacles that women face trying to become filmmakers in the business.
For the first time in her theater career, Sam Clifford unexpectedly finds herself in the director’s chair. New with such an opportunity in a theater setting, she is prepared for the role mentally but not physically. She inevitably encounters opposition because she is the first woman director of this theater, even though she makes an effort to cast and manage the crew.
On day one of the rehearsals, Sam was extremely nervous and at certain points even embarrassed herself in her actions. Despite the efforts required, she, who is supposed to be leading the team, comes off as overly authoritative and indecisive. No matter how hard she tries to change something in the theater production, everything still goes wrong for her.
Sam cannot even get along with her fellow cast or crew members, leaving her with no option but to be self-centered. She is left alone and without help in the moment of need. She is angry and frustrated, so she takes her anger toward one of the people working in the theater and verbally abuses him. This makes things harder for her.
After the context of all this, what will happen, will Sam manage to stay in the director’s chair, or something out of the ordinary will occur? What happened to the chaos? Is the only reason why chaos has happened because she is a female director, or are there much more hideous reasons? To know about it, you need to stream it on Roku.
As in all the sacrifices and plans for any film or other type of project or performance, it is writing that is the deciding factor. The trust you place in the script allows for you to have a greater possibility of accomplishing success in the latter sections of production. Sadly, with the piece ‘First Time Female Director’ one is left disappointed from that perspective.
This screenplay takes us through various stages of the development of the narrative, starting from the pre-production period of a play up to its post-production. Sam is also able to fit into the norms of this and the storyline is rather intriguing. Before plunging into the rest of the narrative, the reader is first warned as to her indecent activities that may be sickening to many, even those not in that sphere b. During the narrative, there shall be one particular instance where she goes all out to be a ‘Mamma Lion,’ pushing every person who attempts to flee from her reach, beyond her grasp. That day’s behavior is for many sufficient grounds for feeling annoyed, just like the characters do.
These events seem real, and so they are satisfying and can be credited to Chelsea who incorporates such elements in her scripts well. She does this considerably well in her representation of Sam, who is loud, and all over the place, confused in what it is that she wants out of life. If the character was meant to be an annoying lunatic, then she convincingly did it. The rest of the cast members, though very loud like Sam, did not have enough room and time to exhibit their brilliance.
The film’s only advantage is its plot of a woman trying to be a first-time female director and struggling. An audience seeking entertainment or engagement with the film as a whole will find little satisfaction as the film does not provide much else. That being said, there is nothing wrong with the brash treatment, but the plot is rather underdeveloped. Throughout the entire movie, Chelsea Peretti seems a little murky about how to build the story, just like the lead character Sam.
To sum up, First Time Female Director is more or less a hit-and-miss. There are certain points where cherry picking story concepts and Chelsea’s attraction could work, making it slightly easier to sit through. Before long, however, it is clear that the film has inconsistencies and a lack of focus on the audience’s engagement. It has some good bits but at the end of the day, it is still lacking.
