Demon City Plot Summary
The Netflix action movie Demon City resides in the world of the Oni Goroshi manga and is a complete banger. The film contains well-executed choreography, a simple yet captivating plot, and thrilling, visceral fight scenes. The movie might be a surging hit of the year.
The plot follows Sakata, a ruthless hitman who doesn’t spare any mercy to anyone blocking his path. Things take a turn when a gang referred to as the Kimen-gumi bust into his home, taking his wife and daughter hostage.
Sakata finds himself in an unplayable situation where he gives up his free will, ends up seeing his Aoi and Ryo get murdered, framed for the crime and rendered a lifeless body.
12 years go by, and Shinjo City has never had depths of crime that have surfaced, controlled by none other than the masked gang leader mayor Ryu Sunohara. Kimen-gumi engages in the complete range of nefarious activities, with blood money flooding the city from human trafficking and large-scale drug smuggling.
Why are Kimen-gumi so dangerous?
Kimen-gumi’s emergence from the shadows in Shinjo City can be attributed to plans conceived by Ryu’s gang. These reached a culmination when his lackeys on the city council conspired to place him in the Mayorship. Predictably, this did not turn out well for Shinjo City.
With untamed access to the Shinjo City infrastructure, they’ve initiated business in human trafficking and drug peddling. Sakata did their bidding and became the harbinger of the demon-masked maniacs in power by eliminating their rivals for the city.
While Kimen-gumi projects the image of restoring civility and order as benevolent citizens, they are thriving on the crime which sits at the foundation of their power. Working to ensure a society that does not help the weak aids them in the goal of fortifying the rich why not fund their successful operation? That’s why Kimen-gumi is considered dangerous.
The issue and squander within society branches of violence and crime, is something that should receive attention sprinkled throughout the narrative of public relations. The demon-masked member’s project objectives serve as a twist in the rich vs poor paradigm.
Is Ryo truly dead?
Sakata is shocked to learn that Ryo is not dead after clearing an entire warehouse filled with goons. Sunohara tells Sakata after the factory fight that Ryo is alive, warning him that if he does not abandon this revenge quest, his daughter will suffer a gruesome fate. Sunohara promises his daughter will be brutally murdered if he does not abandon this mission.
Ryo’s Information is being kept captive by a company called Shinjo Security, which is essentially a front company for the Kimen-gumi yakuza group disguised as a legitimate business. Doing a bit of research, Sakata discovers that.
From Shinjo Security, Sakata obtains the address and violently makes his way into the region’s apartment. There, he meets Kanta Fase, self-styled as Ryo’s father. This is the same man who shot his wife dead. Ryo, of course, is unaware of all this, having been raised by the man she now believes to be her father for the past twelve years. Ryo tries to kill Sakata with an arrow, but does not succeed as Officer Takigawa Yoshifumi manages to save him.
How does Sakata locate Ryo?
With Ryo’s life in danger, the only way to save him is to make a visit to Mahoroba and rescue the daughter. So Sakata grabs a plane ticket and, to no one’s surprise, does stunningly.
Unfortunately, he relaxes his vigilance, and sooner or later, he is up against Sunohara. Fortunately, Officer Takigawa comes to the rescue and begins firing everywhere, granting Sakata some much-needed time, while Ryo at last starts to recall what a true father is when she hears him screaming at her to get away.
Who triumphs in the final fight?
In the end, the duel commences with Sakata and Sunohara, with the latter claiming that he will have the pleasure of watching the apparition of the demon out of Sakata. All this time, he has been claiming that one person is born with this “gift”, but also taking into consideration that Sunohara is skillful, notwithstanding. He defeats Sakata and, after severing his hand, is astounded at the fact that the man keeps coming to his feet and continues the fight. He understands now that this is a man who will fight till the end. They end up both stabbing each other in the final clash but Sakata won first, and so in this case, it was Sakata who was faster and managed to take down the Mayor, hack and destroy him.
As the fight appears to be over, Kanta Fase returns and suddenly shoots Sakata dead. Ryo understands the trap she’s in, but she tries to step back and negate the deal. He gets killed by Sakata seconds before he embraces his daughter. He apologizes to Ryo, saying that he couldn’t protect her mother and died.
The villain will be dead, but Ryo is completely fine. She is alive alongside him, having been rescued from Sunohara and his thugs. And she manages to slip out as the cleanup crew steps in.
Does Demon City have a closing scene?
Ryo even got some time with her. Fast forward a year with Sunohara staying alive. Ryo holds a bow in his hand and aims demonstratively at Sunohara’s neck. While it seems clear he survives the blow, it does render him dead, and Ryo manages to finish what her father initiated a year prior. As she rides off after the deed is done, the screen fades to black.
Sunohara survives the initial blow, but he does have a nasty scar on his cheek. With some damage caused by Sakata’s rampage. He seems to be trying to open Mahoroba.
The playground seems undone.
Ultimately, this entire narrative revolving around the demon and the unstoppable force lives on in Ryo, who takes on her father’s role and attempts to cleanse the city of this gang’s grime. The remnants of his warped belief system around this demon are visible in Sunohara, as this ultimately leads to his demise.
As for Ryo and his endeavors, he has his work cut out for him dealing with the numerous city officials aligned with the Kimen-gumi, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel… as Ryo rides off, a sense of optimism lies in the air that perhaps changes are coming to the city but, we’ll have to wait and see.
