In his film, “Danger on Party Island”, directed by Danny J. Boyle, Mel Dale loses her sister in an accident. She arrives at Fang Key to get Georgia’s body but knows something is off. She begins looking into the circumstances of her sister’s death out of frustration.

The story is quite simple in some sense. It is an investigation thriller plot where the movie elevation starts with Mel reaching Fang Key to assess her sister an almost dead, cliff-diving victim.

Nonetheless, Mel successfully identifies a Georgia tattoo. But as Mel said in an interview, the woman died under particularly strange circumstances that could not have occurred by chance. Georgia was a worker at Paula’s resort offering yoga sessions, but something feels weird with her demise. Locals suggest Georgina was a heavy drinker and even over-sexualized which only fuels Mel’s motivation to solve the riddle of her sister’s premature death.

The plot may be well-known, however, it is at the character of Mel that the filmmakers aimed most gracefully. Instead of being an invincible heroine of other mystery thrillers, Mel is developed as a caring but weak sister. She goes through a firm evolution of character throughout the screen as she remains in distress about her sister’s assassination and is ready to go to any lengths to seek the truth.

Mel has always been interesting to watch because she is based on many issues that society has. Because Mel is timid and anxious at first, which is unusual because throughout the journey she becomes strong-willed and willing to face many challenges and dangers. But, not all dangers can derail Mel as her fondness for her sister brings her back on track time and again.

As Mel, Lindsey Dresbach perfectly captures suspicion and courage and nails the role. What sets Andrea Prevett apart is her performance as Georgia Dale and James Bobo is no less than perfect as the suspicious yet kind Jever Lewis. Moreover, Adam Harper and Kate Dailey as Paula and Keaton respectively draw a portrait of opposition to their characters.

Fang Key Island acts as a most deceptive yet beautiful background as it is totally against what is present within the island i.e. ugly truths and lies. It has been made to look like the most beautiful place for a holiday providing all the facilities that one may look for.

Nevertheless, the more menacing side of the island makes a very interesting contrast to the more beautiful one. The islanders of Fang Key are portrayed as a humble close-knit society that sells the small-town appeal of being well acquainted by all heads.

But in emulating this peaceful portrayal, the affluent hosts tightly mask their savage identity behind a facade of help. Their insincere lines delivered in a scoffing manner towards oblivious vacationers make the plot even scarier. Whereas the script of the film is quite impressive, I would suggest that they use more of strong dramatic themes, so that it reaches further.

The participants’ personas in the imposition of the true scoundrels and the disgusting acts done on their victims are vague and therefore dissatisfying to the viewers. The peak of the story, regrettably, is anticlimactic considering what the narrative may have been.

All in all, the plot was interesting, the actors were convincing, and the scenery stunning, but some aspects of it do leave one unsatisfied. Some characters like Jever and the police officer could have been better than they turned out to be. Also, the music does not offer anything worth noticing and the final scene does not have the detail the entire movie deserves.

All in all, it’s an ok film if you are slightly bored and have nothing else to do. But if you choose to give it a miss, you’re not losing out on a great deal.
