Have you wondered about how the world may end? Will the immense ocean reclaim its territory, obliterating humanity, which has acted as a vile organism to this planet or will the planet herself ransack all forms of life out of frustration and settle the score for all the deeds and misdeeds her inhabitants have brought upon her?
What decisions would be easier to make in a place like a shanty town, which used to be warm and inviting, and where the conversational code of the land is more or less ‘maim or be maimed’? To put it instead, how far would someone go to stay alive, and at what extent of cost? That’s what the new Netflix movie Don Lee leaves the viewer within the context of a dystopian movie.
Finally, a long-awaited post-apocalyptic action movie called Badland Hunters has been released and it in simplicity has been released with a bang, many times it would seem. Full of blood and pieces of human head cut off with the sharpness of a butcher knife and many other features of a vain, ‘cold-hearted’ creation, Badland Hunters is in an abundance of madness and perfectly choreographed action scenes.
The film shows the aftermath of the earthquake that occurred in Concrete Utopia, which is centered around Seoul. Badland Hunters tells the story from the point of view of the apartment residents. Following the devastation of the apartment in Concrete Utopia, there is hardly anything left but a gigantic concrete barrier waiting for the military to come along and try to build a shelter and place a source of water within the region. Everything is going perfectly fine until our principal evil researcher Yang Gi-su marches forward.
However, the movie starts with a bad CGI fight between the crocodile and a local “hunter” Nam-san, and his 18-year-old friend Choi Ji-wan. Nam-san finishes off the ‘crocodile’ with a well-aimed and crafted knife cut. This picture is a rest for the eyes since it prepares the audience for what the main plot will have in store as the protagonists engage in combat with grotesquely deformed humanoid reptiles.
We are confronted with the community of individuals living inside a bus who exchange the little they possess, scoop the dirty lake water and drink, and hope someday to live in the slum they call an apartment. While one would cringe at the thought of lacking amenities, it is preferable to belong to this community than the one comprising the apartment settlers of Concrete Utopia, with Don Lee as Nam san serving as the perfect foil to Young Tak the parent, only here for the children
As Badland Hunters, on this instance in the cinemas lights he is most of a martial arts director however fans will rejoice, Heo Myeong Haeng’s directorial debut where he directs the action so well, showcases some of the best-choreographed fights set with Don Lee, in particular, great as he weaves down a tight lobbied apartment and dispatches targets all there as they appear, who comes An Ji hye as special forces striking Sergeant Eun ho, stunning us with brief jabs which follow with her from angle slices.
Nonetheless, only modest doses of humour and the action sequences are all that are present in the movie. Going through the film’s core plot is simple, beat the bully and rescue the big-breasted woman. There is no doubt this movie is targeted at a certain group of fans who are satisfied with the amount of blood and the action scenes without any story, background of the characters, or any good dialogue, and the movie delivers exactly that.
Thus the film is just another lazy mashup and a rehash of zombie and science fiction B-movies with predictable dialogues, scummy cinematography, and bad writing but with some awesome Don Lee action that saves it from complete obliteration. It still serves its purpose as a, let us not say classic, but a unique one-time film experience that is good if you like the sound of skulls being split open.
