With Atlas arriving next month, it is probably time for Jennifer Lopez to concentrate on genre movies, as she is good at them
Last week, the trailer, which has developed a slightly loud but positive reaction, for Netflix’s science fiction thriller Atlas surfaced on the web. The plot revolves around Jennifer Lopez playing a character called a data analyst, who is predisposed to disbelieving artificial intelligence, and her attempts to tame a rogue robot do not turn out as hoped. From the look of the trailer, we don’t know much, but the visual effects seem quite nice, and Jennifer Lopez appears quite passionate about the material judging from the one hundred and eight seconds we have access to in the teaser.
There can be no doubt that Show business is dynamic as far as John Lopez is concerned. In addition to being a successful recording artist and businesswoman, she is also known as a leading actress in several films, primarily romcoms and or dramas. So, did it ever occur to you that she does particularly well in genre movies?
Lopez achieved fame and notoriety in the mid-1990s in the biographical film Selena based on the life of the famous Tejano singer Selena Quintanilla-Perez. From then on, various roles were offered to her. But it was rare that Lopez took on such roles even in horror and sci-fi genres, and the movies she chose to act in were mostly neglected or unnoticed.
While many consider the movie to be one of the worst ever made, Anaconda stands out for all the supporters who tuned in to witness the furious Ciara Diamond as portrayed by Jennifer Lopez or the other major cast consisting of Jon Voight and a monstrous anaconda. Unlike many, I consider Anaconda to be one of the perfect horror/animal attack movies ever made. It is also arguably the most important film that sparked the animal attack sub-genre in movies back in the late 90s.
Another film that should forever remain in Lopez’s filmography, despite what she thinks due to how infrequently she discusses the movie, is Anaconda; The majority of fans appreciate it. It is one of several reasons that, especially in light of her style-modifying films, she deserves to keep experimenting with lesser-known ones.
Did someone say nightmares turned to life? A favorite of hers, The Cell (2000), was also not well received by LCD fans but genre movie enthusiasts welcomed it into their collection. In the film, Lopez is cast in the role of an FBI agent whose job is to go into the minds of serial killers and locate their abducted victims.
The Cell makes for an interesting watch as it has quite a different presentation, probably not so simple for the ordinary viewer, especially if you happen to have seen other works from Lopez. However, the 2000s turned out to be productive for JLo but in the process, moved away from horror and science fiction films despite starring in movies such as Angel Eyes and Enough.
Those were too thrilling but didn’t do so well in the showrooms. During this period, Lopez was moving up and up in her music career. However, it was quite a long time for the audiences and critics to see Lopez in a lead role, when she starred in The Boy Next Door in 2015, which was produced by Blumhouse. Sleazy sexual thriller about a woman older than her eighteen-year-old lover who turns out to be a bit of a lunatic. It’s as if Lifetime movies had the volume turned to 100 on how they are made.
On a different note, to this juncture, Netflix has Atlas now, a well-looking sci-fi movie featuring JLo in the lead. Some internet banterers find it annoying to see her in a movie of this sort. However, Lopez, in the few genre films that she has acted in, has managed to do quite a decent job as well as playing her character as if the script she was working on deserved some respect.
There is very little we know about Atlas, but as the title suggests, it appears to be an over-the-top direct-to-streaming content feature, which seems to be a disaster, but there is a chance it can be successful. Perhaps a new chapter where Lopez embarks on a sci-fi trek and may even dissipate it into horror in the future.
Over the years, we have seen many multi-talented actors and actresses take chances in their second act in something different than what they were used to. There has always been the perspective of ideating Jennifer Lopez performing these sorts of films rather than romcoms, which quite frankly fits her persona, and now is the time to delve deeper into that.
