Companion Google Docs Plot Summary

As far as the perfect couple goes, Iris (Sophie Thatcher) and Josh (Jack Quaid) seem to check all the boxes. They met at a supermarket and immediately fell in love. Now, nearly a year later, they are in a great relationship, but their biggest test comes when they have to meet Josh’s friends.

As with most thrillers, this plot also begins in a very original way. A remote cabin in the wilderness. The first part of this movie is told from Iris’s point of view and is certainly the most enticing. It begins with an incredibly awkward meet and greet with Russian guy Sergey, Kat, his disgruntled partner, and bubbly lovers Eli and Patrick, who head the cabin first. It then proceeds to serve the twist that throws everything up in the air, allowing multiple perspectives to filter in. We advise that you go into this movie with absolutely no idea what to expect or what the twist ending is for maximum effect.

As something significant is revealed, there is a plot shift that adds another layer of depth towards our characters, while for Iris, she faces the shattering of the world she knew. From here, the rest follows a timeless storyline of a classic hunter versus the hunted, riddled with themes of vengeance and deception, building up to a captivating showdown that takes place within the house.

What is Iris?

As the plot proceeds to thicken in true form, we discover Iris is a companion robot created to function as an “emotional support bot that fucks” as Josh so ridiculously phrases it. These bots, including Iris, come equipped with an “outline of memories” meant to provide a framework and context. Their first meeting was curated from a collection of other famous meet-cutes, which makes it all the more baffling that they never met at the supermarket. In reality, Josh had a delivery brought over to his place, not some bizarre supermarket rendezvous.

Josh is informed that he has to create a “love-link” with Iris after the bot is delivered. Everything is voice-activated, including a slider that can change Iris’ intelligence. However, there are limits to how much she can be changed. She is also unable to harm humans and animals, and can lie. Additionally, the ‘Factory Reset’ function is activated by resting a thumb on the back of the bot’s ear.

Why was Iris framed for the murder of Sergey?

We understand that Josh and Kat are the masterminds behind Sergey’s Murder. Josh remotely accessed Iris’ controls with the intent to kill Sergey by making changes to the parameters of aggression as well as self-defense. He also modified the protocols to allow deadly actions against humans. Josh intended that Iris would murder Sergey after he had his way with her at the lake.

She, too, was fed up and angry and did not wish to continue in the titular wife role. Kat knew that he was sitting on 12 million dollars, which happens to be locked behind this insane metallic door, called a safe. The smarter step was to share the family’s money with Josh after they framed Iris for murder. Unfortunately, the plan did not progress as planned.

Does Josh kill Iris?

After all of the nonsense surrounding Iris and Patrick, Josh has this moment where he is regretting everything he has ever done while restraining Iris. He is fortunate enough to realize that Patrick is a robot as well. Iris, marking her territory, continues to ridicule him and pay for the consequences that Josh faces. He ultimately gains control of her intelligence and lowers it to a whopping 0%. It turns out that Josh tortures Iris and, ultimately, after making her set her hand on fire, Josh tells her to kill herself.

While workers from Emphatix systematically check her over, Josh makes up a story about how Iris was an obsessive and jealous girlfriend. Emphatix is the company that makes the bots. The two workers, however, are unable to make a formal connection.

With horror, Josh realizes that everything a companion hears and observes is recorded in real time. Beyond that, Iris’s CPU is in her chest and not her head. This means that his torture and murder of the robot may have consequences.

We learn through the conversation between the two workers that murdering a bot is something often done. These two aren’t surprised at all. What they didn’t plan on was seeing Patrick come in and kill the two.

How does Iris manage to stop Josh?

Iris, after being rebooted, tries to take Patrick down with a zapper. A taser and silly commands do little to change his mind, and only when she tells him directly that she’s going to die without Eli does he relent. Supported by ways that he isn’t pawned back into madness, Patrick decides (with one bullet in the chamber) to end it all.

Returning to the house, Iris is given true freedom while Teddy, one of the Emphatix workers, grants her complete control over her body and mind as a reward for saving him from Patrick’s murderous rampage. Afterwards, Iris walks toward Jack with a gun and states that from this moment forth, he no longer belongs to her. She ultimately kills him with a corkscrew. This is something that was foreshadowed earlier in the movie, as multiple characters use this corkscrew, making it a nice way to bring this back to the forefront again.

What happens at the end of Companion?

After becoming a mass murderer, Iris decides to leave the house after killing Josh. She doesn’t alter her appearance, but takes Sergey’s car and presumably goes on the road. Chances are she won’t get too far, since Emphatix and the police will likely be hot on her trail.

She waves to another Iris bot before driving down the highway. Since all Iris bots have their sight and hearing recorded, they know Emphatix will retrieve this footage if they look closely.

The police will probably pursue the sports car that she is currently driving, and with no flesh on her fingers, showcasing her robotic hand, she will be captured and reset to her original settings. Success for Iris, I suppose?
