The Electric State Plot Summary

In the middle of this dull, dystopian world lies Michelle, a tech-hating orphan. She could not care less about headsets which drones gloriously surround her in, choosing to “prefer” mourning her brother, who was a tech wizard. Christopher’s existence is a void nonetheless. After a bot appears that might have the key to Christopher’s consciousness, the pair embark on a road trip to discover the secrets that lie untold.

From the second half of the film, we see Michelle uncovering certain variables about her brother and eventually standing up against the system that has suppressed robots for so long.

What went down during the robot uprising?

Robots were first designed to take over a chunk of mundane yet menial tasks that this world provides. Till they demanded a life of their own and rebelled. Seeking equal rights, violent protests and war became the new norm. Henceforth, anyone owning a robot is illegally possessing property and is a treasonous scum.

While at Sentre Technologies, a visionary by the name of Ethan Skate pioneered the robot revolution by creating the Neurocaster, a device that connects the mind to drone bodies. Within weeks, robots were effectively imprisoned at Sentre’s Exclusion Zone, and the war was over.

Is Christopher still alive?

We learn pretty early on that he in fact does live, and Christopher is very much alive; Ethan Skate has been trying to perfect their Neurocaster by working with Christopher’s subconscious. He gets Colonel Bradbury, a Bot hunter, to find the Bot who is working with Michelle.

Dr Amherst reveals that a Sentre imaging machine after the war indicated that Christopher was like a “gift from God”, one of a kind. Alongside Michelle, there is a shocking discovery that Christopher, while being in a coma, was being experimented on. The mind is the link between the drones and the Neurocasters, and without Christopher, there is no drone technology.

Even more troubling, Christopher has come out of his coma, is awake and cognizant, but Ethan will not let him leave. That is why Dr. Amherst set up some kind of a link to the outside world for Chris, a network that allows his thoughts to be free. This also explains the Cosmo bot and how it located Michelle. Therefore, Michelle chooses to rescue the real Christopher.

In what ways does Michelle rescue Christopher?

The Kid Cosmo bot is abducted and taken to Sentre HQ, while the exclusion zone HQ is annihilated. The Colonel is furious that his code has been hacked and that he has been betrayed, and decides to turn his wits against Ethan Skate.

Michelle begins to lead the Bots in a campaign against Sentre. A major battle then takes place in Sentre, with Ethan Skate himself putting on an enormous drone suit to battle. All the misfit bots get to fight, while The Colonel spares Mr. Peanut after he gives a winning speech and realizes there is “somebody more inhuman than robots.” He tells him where Ethan is.

While the conflict continues outside, Michelle encounters Christopher’s body and decides to neurologically attach herself to him. In that moment she tells him goodbye and concludes that she has to free their future by surrendering to the past. In this case by breaking the neurological bond that Christopher holds with all the drones. Finally, she tells him goodbye, and Christopher affirms to her that she’s the one destined to ask boundless questions and save the world.

Who dies in The Electric State?

As word starts to spread regarding Sentre’s treatment towards Christopher, Mr. Peanut begs to change the terms of the agreement, and Ethan Skate gets detained. On the other hand, Michelle is celebrated as a heroine after the successful coup and the Exclusion Zone is removed, granting all robots access to freedom. While a lighthearted piano cover of Wonderwall plays in the background, Michelle delivers a speech about being electric alongside humanity and leaves the screen.

So what’s happening in the world now?

In this instance, it seems like humans and robots can work in symbiotic relation together as machines are now granted more privileges. Additionally, it looks like they wish to select their employment, which creates competition amongst humans for jobs or other resources. Without Neurocaster technology, humans would not be able to prevent another uprising (that is, according to the film’s worldbuilding rules following the first conflict), and it could, in an extreme scenario, lead to the complete extinction of humanity.

But the film doesn’t explore this and leaves us with a narrative where it’s assumed to be an ‘ever after’ situation, as Michelle proudly unlocks all robot restrictions.
