Novocaine Plot Summary
Novocaine is an entertaining action comedy featuring Jack Quaid, Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Jacob Batalon, and Betty Gabriel. The horror film directors, Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, premiered it in March 2025.
The film centers around an over-the-top action comedy trope featuring a socially awkward bank assistant manager, Nathan Caine (Quaid), who has only one friend, an anonymous gamer called Roscoe (Batalon). To make the depiction of Nathan more interesting, he suffers from a condition called Congenital Insensitivity to Pain (CIP).
Nate starts developing feelings for his new co-worker Sherry (Midthunder), who is subsequently held hostage by Simon (Nicholson) and his gang during a bank robbery. And of course, the police completely fail to arrive on time. In a heroic turn of events, Nate chooses to pursue the robbers to rescue Sherry. In a classic over-the-top feel, Nate utilizes his insensitivity against him to fight the bad guys and evade capture by the police, who mistake him for a robber.
What course of action does Nate take to locate the remaining robbers?
Once Nate tracks and executes the first robber, Ben, he notices a tattoo of a skull on the man’s arm. He gave Roscoe a call and he was able to get the address of the tattooist. While attempting to exploit Ben’s tattoo, the tattoo artist realizes something is not quite right. He tried to fight with the tattooist and his assistant and end up losing. After torturing the tattooist, Nate gets Ben’s complete name, and with the bank contact, I was able to get an address.
He goes to Ben’s who has set up traps in his house prepared by his brother, Andre. Nate gets caught up in a snare and calls Roscoe to bail him out. Andre also checks on the brother, and Roscoe happens to be 10 minutes away. With Nate able to manipulate Andre into torturing him for 10 minutes, Roscoe arrives in time to turn the tables. Taking out Andre leads them to the hideout, which turns out to be Ben’s car repair shop, where Sherry and Simon are hiding.
Why are the cops after Nate?
When the bank manager does not cooperate, the robbers “threaten” Sherry until Nate gives them the code of the vault. Then, he takes a cruiser and goes after them. Unfortunately, the cops think Nate has been colluding with them the entire time.
In addition to that, after Nate kills Ben, he takes the robber’s car, which contains all the stolen money. The bystanders do tell the police, which does not help Nate’s situation. Detective Langston knows that he has a clean record and tries to call him. It is helpful since Nate does answer the call. Still, he does not agree to surrender himself because, as he argues, he has to save the love of his life.
While Langston is willing to make sense of him, she keeps pursuing him for the charges of manslaughter and theft. After he kills Andre, Roscoe impersonates Nate and directs the police away from the real Nate. This lets the real Nate escape to the automobile shop.
Why does Sherry choose Nate over Simon?
While waiting for Ben, it is revealed that Sherry is Simon’s sister, and she is part of the heist. She worked as a bank teller and started dating Nate to gain access to the safe. However, we find out soon enough that she does not like violence and reproaches Simon for his killings.
When Nate arrives and Simon tells him the truth, Sherry admits that she did fall for Nate, in the end. The final straw for her is when Simon manipulates a very exhausted Nate into a position where he attempts to crush him with a car. She hits him and dares him to kill her. Unfortunately for her, he is furious at her betrayal and decides to kill her instead. Langston’s partner, Duffy, arrives just in time and shoots Simon before he can murder Sherry.
Sherry was not given a chance and was extremely vulnerable, Sherry was betrayed by Simon’s manipulation.
How does it end for Nate?
Simon goes on to kill Duffy, shoot Langston, and flee in the ambulance. While Sherry has Roscoe escort Langston to the hospital, Sherry goes after Simon. Simon is oblivious to the fact that Nate passed out in the ambulance.
After Nate defibrillates the two of them, he is fully awake. The pain he endures forces Simon to flip the ambulance. The fight is still not going well as Simon brutally breaks Nate’s arm in such a way that the bone protrudes through the skin. Sherry arrives in time and the siblings fight.
At the same time, Nate gets an adrenaline shot from an EpiPen in the ambulance. With just a few seconds to go, he manages to stab Simon in his neck with the bone he fractured before losing consciousness.
A week later, Nate wakes up in a hospital with his body covered in casts. The outcome is that Simon is dead, Langston is alive, and Roscoe is fine. Because of his efforts, Nate only has to serve 6 months of house arrest.
The epilogue of Novocaine is set a year later. Sherry tells Nate that while he is staying in an area close to the prison where she’s incarcerated. Sherry’s sentence has been shortened to just seven months. Nate surprises her with a pie, which is by far the most enticing solid food he’s ever shared with her. As they leave the visit, he bites the pie and smiles at her.
